GOVERNOR'S
OFFICE
by RAYMOND GARY
What have you done for me
lately?
In politics and government
that's the most often heard
question It's not surprising be
cause most of us judge the
world on the basis of what hap-
pens to us personally
Bitterest critics of our wei
fare programs tend to be those
blessed with more than the us-
ual amount of worldly goods
They find it haul to understand
why some of our finest citizens
never make much money n
On the other side some wel-
fare recipients are resentful be-
cause they don't receive more
This is understandable too
since even the comparative:v
liberal pensions of today don't
allow for the frills of life we
all enjoy
Every state expenditure 15
looked upon by some as ext-asagance
Generally only those
who directly benefit really un-
derstand the need
Lots of folks in Oklahoma Ci-
ty and Tulsa for example think
it's wasting money to build a
road through my little home
town of Kingston These same
people don't hesitate about re-
questing far greater expendi-
tures with less justification
for their own communities
I know businessmen who don't
leave a stone unturned in their
efforts to do business with the
state Then I hear some of the
same fellows complain the bid-
ding is too competitive and
they can't make a profit
In my time I've beard some
loud complaints about this or
that state employee being ov-
erpaid Then I've watched with
interest some of the complain
ers after taking a state jot
themselves pout because "the
pay is too low"
—Whether digging a ditch or
running a hank most people
figure some training or exper-
ence is necessary They of'en
don't feel the same way how-
ever about one of the most
complicated aspects of our so-
ciety government
Lack of experience is apt to
be considered a virtue rather
than a drawback The theory
is that anyone can run the go
vestment better than whoever
happens to be doing so at the
moment
Sometimes we get a chance to
see the wisdom of this theory
demonstrated When that hap-
pens I have observed the cr1
ticism shifts to complaining a-
bout lack of knowledge
Simple solutions to comples
problems are hard to find Es
pecially in government there
is more than one group to be
considered on every issue
My experience has been that
there is one thing in state go
vernment which doesn't change
— human nature We are all
somewhat inclined to believe
that the most serious problems
are those which affect us direct-1Y-We
may feel sympathy but
the pain doesn't really come
through when it's the other fei
low who stubs his toe His pain
may even be our pleasure pro-
viding we benefit
This is why democracy is the
fairest form of government Jnd
the noisiest
