on down. the Big Eight Conference was dominated
by guards during the 1975-76 basketball season and so
is the United Press International Ail Big Eight
basketball team
Leading the team, of course, was Smith the 6-3
senior who led Missouri to its first undisputed cham
pionship since 1930 He was joined on the first team
by guards Chuckie Williams and Mike Evans of Kan-
sas State and Jerry Fort of Nebraska and forward
Jim Kennedy of Missouri
Smith had supporters everywhere he went in the
Big Eight and was not even challenged for the
league’s player-of the-year honor He averaged 24 8

shots, and averaged nearly six points and six

Williams and Evans provided Kansas State with an

Anderson was one of five players selected to UPI’s
second team Joining him were guard Hercle Ivy the
secondleading scorer in the league, and forward Art
Johnson the top-scoring nonguard of Iowa State,
center Carl Gerlach of Kansas sate and forward
Norm Cook of Kansas, who made the first team last
year as a sophomore
Gerlach, Ivy and Johnson are all seniors while
Cook and Anderson are juniors
Honorable mention selections were guard Ronnie
Daniel of Oklahoma State center Larry Cox of
Nebraska and Ray afreshman from Missouri

Michael Smith and James
Martin, both of Altus. recently
placed in the All-American
Karate Championships held in
Oklahoma City.
Both greenbelts. Smith won
second in heavyweight and
Martin won second in
middleweight.
This was Martin's second
trophy. He recently placed
third in his division at the Tulsa
State Tae-Kwon-Do
Championships.
Smith, who is employed at
Jackson County Memorial
Hospital, has been a Karate
student for about seven
months. Martin, stationed at
Altus AFB, is a six-month
student.
They represented the
Okinawian Karate Sho-Kin-
Kyu, Altus.
