Church Heads
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (UPD
—Dr. Martin Luther King Jr
told the American Baptists
Convention (ABC) today that
many of the nation's leading
segregationists are also church
leaders.
The Negro civil rights leader
said it is a “tragic fact that
many perpetrators of this sys-
tem are not what we consider
wicked" but are "god church
people” who are misinformed.
“Though many preach segre-
gation for political and eco-
nomic reasons, others sincerely
believe segregation to be good
for themselves, their children
and their nation ... they sin-
cerely feel that they are doing
the will of God," King said.

Mrs. Kennedy also plans to

Tuesday night. Dr. Ralph D.
Abernathy, Atlanta. a King lieu-
tenant, told the ABC that the
church is not meeting its re-
sponsibility in civil rights. He
said Christians "cannot possibly !
keep silent during his crucial
hour."
But the Rev. Enoch Clayton
Brown, Columbia, S.C., deliver-
ing the SBC's keynote sermon, I
said churches should not at-;
tempt direct “social and eco-
nomic reforms." Brown said
New Testament Christians con-
ducted no crusades against
slavery and other evils "be
cause they recognized that the
roots of all wrongs are in the
hearts of men. and their efforts
were directed toward the re-
generation of those hearts He
said the same format should be
followed today
The SBC's Christian Life Com-
mission o f f e r e d a resolution
calling for Southern Baptists to
“give themselves to the deci-
give defeat of racism" The
measure will come up for a
convention vote Thursday.
A stronger proposal was In-
troduced Tuesday by the ABC's
Resolution Commitee. It sug-
gested that churches participate
in "nonviolent action" and take
other steps to end segregation.

CHICAGO (UPI) - The Flor-
ida real estate man who admit-
ted he lied to investigators to
protect Teamsters union Presi-
dent James R. Hoffa and two
co-defendants was to undergo
cross-examination today.
Vaughn Connelly teestified
Tuesday at the 125 million
fraud trial of Hoffa and seven
associates that he gave false
testimony to Senate investiga-
tors in 1959 and to a federal
grand jury in I960 about an
"under the table" deal and re-
ceived a personal thank you
from Hoffa.
Connelly made the statements
in the U.S. District Court of
Richard B. Austin where he
earlier said it cost him $300,000
in "under tthe table payments’
to two alleged go-betweens to
arrange a $3.3 million loan.
Connelly said the secret pay-
ments were made to Benjamin
Dranow. Minneapolis business-
man. and Calvin Kovens, a
Miami construction official
Hoffa and his seven associ-
ates are accused of fradulently
using teamsters union pension
funds and diverting some $17.
million of that amount to their
own use.
