VANCE CONVICTED
Jury at El Reno Gives Sayre Man
Life Sentence -
The jury in the case of the
Territory vs Elmo Vance char-
ged with murder returned a ver-
dict late Friday night of “guilty
of murder in the first degree”
and recommended a life sentence
Vance’s attorneys filed amotion
for a new trial This motion will
be heard on March 29 The jury
was out six hours
Vance killed two men Shee-
han and Maddux in a saloon in
tLe town of Sayre Okla in the
month of November 1905 He
was a bartender in the saloon
Sheehan and Maddux were fight-
ing when Vance drew a shot
gun and ordered them out of the
place Shortly afterward he dis-
charged the weapon killing Shee-
han and wounding Maddux in the
hand Maddux afterward died
of blood poisoning The shooting
was alleged to have been unpro-
- yoked
The case was taken to El Reno
on a change of venue from this
county and a change of judge
asked for there Accordingly
the case was tried before Judge
Burford Judge Irwin filling Bur
ford’s place in the Second district
in the meantime
Vance prided himself on his
physical strength and was known
as a bully Too much whisky
and a warlike disposition have
wrought his ruin The prosecu-
tion of the case has been conduc-
ted by County Attorney John C
Hendrix of this place and Bob
Forest of El Reno Harrison &
Welty Garrett & Garrett and
John Carney represented the
defendant
Primary May 23
The Democratic state commit
tee met at Tulsa Tuesday and
ordered a primary for the nomi-
nation of senators state officers
and court officers It was recom-
mended that all other nomina
tionsby primary be made the same
day The committee will meet
Junel to ratify the aefion of the
primaries
It was determined that candi-
dates for senator from Indian
territory and Oklahoma should
be bunched— the Oklahoma man
receiving the largest vote from
the west sideto be one nominee
and the man from Indian territo-
ry receiving a plurality on the
east side to be a nominee
We feel sure that the Roger
Wills county primary will be held
at the same time selected for the
state primary— May 23

The Sayre Standard isn’t sat-
isfied with a nice little county
seat war at home Last week
that paper took occasion to say a
few unkind things about Chey-
enne and to tell how this place is
to lose out on the county seat of
Roger Mills county The Stand-
ard will be called when we have
need for its advice or prophecies
Otherwise look well to Sayre and
quit knocking on Cheyenne
The territorial board of edu-
cation has reduced the average
from 85 per cent to 75 per cent
for common school graduates)
This should be very acceptable
to all those in our common
schools who hope to pass the ex-
amination April 11 and 12
Sayre will dedicate - its new
bridge Monday The enterpris-
ing citizens of that town have
made up a premium of $10 to be
paid any one couple who will risk
walking ou t on the bride to get
married
Not Out for County Seat
Editor Sentinel: 1 notice that
several newspapers have pub-
lished the statement that the Roll
fownsite company is trying to
defeat Cheyenne for the county
seat of Roger Mills county
These statements are unfound-
ed Our object is to build a good
town and the county seat is not
what we are seeking Of course
we would not resist having- the
public buildings etc thrust
upon us J F Curtis

Well the poet is doing his best

“The High School” says Dr
Leonard “does more to develop
strength of mind and character
than do any other four years of
the twenty-two in a full course
from kindergarten to university
Hardly a man fails of distinction
who has done well the High
School work” The reason of
this is probably ' because the
High School graduate can con-
tinue his work without assistance
