Visitors to McAlester the past
few days have noted the greatly im-
proved condition ef the principal
business street It lias been cov-
ered with a reddish coating resem-
bling gravel In reality it is bid
the refuse from the coal mines that
lias been burned in the heap It
resembles the burnt shale used by
railroads although it is liner and
seems to be more brittle Yester-
day afternoon after the heavy show-
ers the street was not the least
muddy The paving material did
not adhere to the wheels of vehicles
or wash out even where the How of
water was large — Capital
This would be a good proposi
lion for the city fathers to investi
gate now that Willmrton is con-
fronted with a clamor for better
streets The Nkws has seen this
burnt slate used for both side-
walks streets and country roads
and knows it is a fueeess We
have the material let us have the
sheets ami the side-walks and
country roads later

Governor Green MeCurtain ac-
companied by Atnous Henry one
of the politicians of the Clioctaw
Nation was in Ft Smith Thurs-
day left Friday for his home at
Kinta Gov MeCurtain had
been to Tuskahoma to look at
the Capitol lihilding wdiich was
badly damaged and ordered that
it be repaired at once
"When I get thru distributing
the deeds I now have for the al-
lottees I will begin making them
out myself and giving them to
the people to whom they belong”
said the Governor in conversa-
tion with a reporter while the
chief executive of the Choctaw
Nation was waiting for his train
“There is nothing in the re-
port that the Secretary of the In-
terior is going to make out and
distribute the deeds himself lie
has no such power Congress
was asked at the last session to
give the secretary this power
but i t was refused
"I will go or send a represent'!
live to see the secretary before I
begin signing and distributing
the deeds for I do not believe
that lie is conversant with the
situation The opposition for
my giving out the deeds is coin-
ing from other sources and is not
the secretary-
If I should stand by and let
the secretary do the work of de-
livering the deeds to allotments
he would not attend to the nut-
ter personally and many of the
deeds would never fall into the
hands of the right parlies They
would be distributed by suboidin-
ates as were the certificates for
land which never did reach the
Indians in many cases but fell
into the hands of the grafters
I am responsible for the sale de-
livery of the deed to each Indian
in my nation and I think that
the secretary will withdraw all
opposition as soon as the matter
has been explained to him
No reward was olTcrcd for the
murderer of Sheriff Russell of
Kiamichi county was offered by
the Choctaw Nation as the
council was nof in session This
matter will probably he taken
up at the next session and I
think that the captors will he re-
wa rded”
