Legislation has also contributed to the change in basic
concepts of home economics thereby influencing new trends
in curriculum development.
Leaders in the field of home economics are constantly
involved in organizing and reorganizing knowledge con-
sidered applicable to various individuals and group learning
situations. Yesterday leaders were engag-ed in preparing
females for the role of homesaking. Today the trend has
shifted and individuals are being trained to ass.mie dual
role responsibilities consisting of training for successful
family life and gainful employment. Yesterday the woman's
place was in the home. Today the woman works in the home
and in the labor market. Statistics reveal that:
--Approximately 27 million women are in
the labor force.
--Eight million mothers with own children
under 1) years of age are in the labor
force.
--Three million working mothers have
children under six.
--Thirty-seven percent of all women in
urIan areas are in the labor force, co o-
pared with twenty-seven percent in rural
areas.
--.early one half of th3 52 million children
under 18 who are living with their mother
only, have an employed mother. By contrast,
one fourth of all small children in hus-
band-wife families, have an emnloyed
mother.
--Recent reports indicate that 9 out of 10
women will je working outside of the home 2
for at least 25 years of taeir adult life.
