I. Introduction and Philoso phy
Thi ;e of change influenced by scientific, technological,
social, economic and cultural developments has marked the turning
point in the history of home economics. These changes have re-
vaaled the need for now concepts, new methodology and the need
to prepare for carefully selected occupations in the light of jou
op ortunities available for -raduates. The dual role of homemaker
and wage earner implies that the home economics curriculum must
be revamped to meet the demands of society.
Realizing that these societal needs largely influence
the structure of the curriculum, the home economics curricula is
designedd to improve the quality of family living and to prep are ii-
dividuals for emlovyent. The commonality of the current needs
indicate that the primar 7 function of the hone economics curriculum
is that of developing individuals to be successful as family
members, productive citizenship and participate effectively in
community service.
In past years, university home economics programs
prepared young women for the task of homemaking. Today, home co-
nomice is something more than upgrading the quality of family living
although this continues to be important, is more than developing
