Description

Photograph taken for a newspaper owned by the Oklahoma Publishing Company. Caption: "Damaged Jeep sits upright after it overturned on Northeast Expressway with two passengers. 2 Injured Seriously As Jeep Jumps Curb Two Oklahoma City men were seriously injured today when a Jeep pulling a late model auto whipped out of control, jumped a curb and flipped on its top in the 7400 block of the Northeast Expressway. Listed in serious condition at Baptist Medical Center were Thomas Lee Pickard, 24, the driver, and Charles E. Rutherford Jr., 32, both of 2211 Belleview Ter. Hospital officials said Pickard was suffering from possible internal injuries and possible fractured hip or leg. Rutherford, a passenger who was thrown from the vehicle, was suffering from multiple lacerations and fractures, hospital officials reported. Both men were undergoing further examination late this morning. Officer C.S. Nelson said Pickard was apparently driving the late model Jeep as he attempted to change lanes about 9:50 a.m. Witnesses said the northbound towed auto began whipping back and forth as Pickard's Jeep completed the lane change. As the rear end of the Jeep started swaying, Pickard apparently lost control and his vehicle hit a curb and flipped on its side before smashing into a traffic sign and rolling over on its top, Nelson said. The towed auto remained upright. Nelson said Pickard was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident. "I credit the roll bar and seat belts for keeping the driver alive. I feel the passenger wouldn't have been hurt so seriously had he had his seat belts on," the officer."
