A Handicap
Ravia Times
The Times this week carries the
announcement of R P Smith as a
candidate for re-election to the of-
fice of commissioner of District No
1 Mr Smith is a man of super-
ior qualifications for the responsi-
ble position During his first
term he has perhaps had to under-
go the bitterest criticism and most
relentless persecution by the lead-
ing newspaper of any public offi-
cial Johnston county has ever had
Being a man of determination and
inflexible will he has naturally
retaliated rather than pacified and
in his race for a second term lie
must only hope to triumph over
his home paper This is a heavy
handicap and if Mr Smith wins
out in his race it will life a victory
and a vindication of which he
may well lie proud And with
three ohcr candidates in the race
all outside the county seat town
it would seem that his chances of
winning are quite favorable Mr
Smith Las always hedged off ’ the
trend of popular picjudice against
the county seat and the heavy
vote of Tishomingo will be quite
apt to stay with him for ordinary
pee pie are not often ungrateful

‘ for The Leader
The Mexican problem causes
us to think of five big boys: Sam
and Bill were neighbors during
Samuel’s absence his mother’s
fowls trespassed on Bill’s moth-
er’s premises Although the act
had hitherto been permissible
Bill now seemed to be possessed
of a spirit composite with evil
and flogged and whipped the
fowls and caused to be visited
ujon them other cruelties and
injustices Upon learning of
the insult to his feathery friends
Sam became exceedingly wroth
and demanded reparation at the
hands of Bill by requiring that
individual to apologize and tip
his hat which the latter refused
to do Preparations for a fight
were made and a combat en-
sued During the course of the
skirmish Bill got decidedly the
worst of it Sam only desired
that which was just and projier
under such circumstances but
hard-headed Bill wouldn’t give
up and assumed an attitude of
more dangerous undertaking
Friends of the combatants want-
ed to settle the difficulty by le-
nient measures for Argie Braz
and Chi had been colleagues at
sabbath school with Sam during
years long past At first Bill
wouldnt listen to the arbitrarial
proposition: though Samuel was
ready with a forgiving heart to
accept or accede to any reasona-
ble and just demand but at last
hard-headed Bill in a half-hearted
way half way consented
