PARCELING OUT THE BLAME: Rock star Madonna says she’s
certainly not to blame for the complete critical and commercial
failure of “Shanghai Surprise," the movie in which she starred with
husband Sean Penn. In a New York interview with British Broad
casting Corp.’s Radio One, Madonna primarily blamed director Jim
Goddard, saying “He’s a television director and he was in over his
head.” Goddard is best known for the British TV series “Reilly: Ace
of Spies" and a John Kennedy mini-series that starred Martin Sheen.
Madonna said backers of “Shanghai," which was produced by ex-
Beatle George Harrison, “wanted an action film like Raiders of the
Lost Ark,’ but the script was really a very personal love story be
tween two people. ... They left out all the stuff about a relationship
which was the saving grace of the film. Madonna didn t want to talk
about her current relationship with the hot-tempered Penn, but said,
“The main thing is trust” and keeping clear of “the other person’s
career has nothing to do with your love for that person
FOR THE REWRITE DESK: New York Gov. Mario Cuomo may
have some new opinions about the press after he spends a day as a
reporter, taking up the challenge offered by Tim O’Brien, columnist
at theJamestown (N.Y.) Post-Journal. “He doesn’t know how to type
but he’s already thinking of story ideas," said Cuomo spokeswoman
Anne Crowley over the weekend. “He’s sure he can help to make
calls, do some legwork.” Cuomo lashed out at reporters more than
once during his recent gubernatorial campaign, even hinting he’d
restrict press access to his office. In his column, O’Brien wrote:
“What I am offering the governor—with my editor’s permission — is
a chance to spend one morning on deadline here, writing one simple
story for our readers and readers statewide." Cuomo called the
paper and agreed, but said he probably can’t get to the job until
February. O’Brien can’t be governor for a day, but Cuomo “kidded
him about possibly finding a job in a prison, ’ ’ Crowley said.
ROYAL RETIREMENT: One of the great sights of the royal year
in Britain has been the annual “Trooping of the Color” ceremony,
when Queen Elizabeth II, in colorful Guards uniform, rode her horse
sidesaddle at the head of her mounted princes, generals and field
marshals. But Buckingham Palace announced Monday that with the
retirement of her sidesaddle horse, “Burmese," the queen, 60, will
switch to a carriage for this year’s festivities celebrating her official
birthday. The ceremony is held in June for weather reasons, even
though the queen was actually born in April. The palace said Bur-
mese has been the queen’s mount for 18 years and she does not want
to break in another horse for riding sidesaddle, a practice that has
become nearly extinct since women began riding in pants. An avid
horsewoman, the queen will continue riding her horses at the royal
estates for recreation, the palace said.
AN NRBQ CHRISTMAS: The eclectic NRBQ, whose blend of rock,
jazz, country, blues and pop has been delighting listeners for nearly
20 years, held a zany holiday celebration at New York’s Lone Star
Cafe Sunday night. A packed house including KBC Band bassist Jack
Casady howled encouragement to New York cult favorites Jake and
the Family Jewels, who opened the show with their own brand of
panmusical frivolity. The good times rolled in earnest when NRBQ
took the stage accompanied by great jazz trombonist Roswell Rudd,
who sat in for two sets and a play-all-night encore. NRBQ and Rudd
knew each other from the Thelonious Monk tribute LP, “That’s the
Way I Feel,” and the group again smashed barriers between jazz and
rock with a toetapping rendition of Monk’s “Friday the Thirteenth. "
Rudd made a rare vocal attempt with a be-bopping “Silent Night."
Before the lights went down NRBQ played rocking versions of “God
Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen,” "Jolly Old St. Nicholas” and an original
peace-on-earth anthem, “Merry Christmas.”

Marychris Mass — not a name
people forget
PORTLAND, Ore. — Mar
ychris Mass rolls her eyes
whenever she meets someone
who wisecracks: “Sure, and my
name is Happy Easter,” or
“Happy Hanukkah. ”
But the 32-year-old clothing
and costume designer said
though she detested her name
when younger, she now enjoys
the fact it’s a name people will
remember.
“It works two ways,” she said.
“Either people are offended,
thinking I’m putting them on, or
they stop and ask about my
name.”
Mass, explaining she was not
bom during the holidays, said
her mother and father had wan-
ted a boy and picked out only
boys’ names.
A woman sharing her mother’s
room at the hospital suggested
Mary Christine as a girl’s name,
then said it would be even better
cut it to Marychris. Her mother
liked the name and settled on it.
Having an unforgettable name
can be troublesome, however.
At a social event, Mass said,
she met a woman who gave her
an icy reception and said, “I dis-
like you very much. A woman
named Mary Christmas stole my
fiance.”
“Once again I had to spell out
my name, and explain I did not
know the man of whom she
spoke,” Mass said.

McDonald’s at the North Pole
NORTH POLE, Alaska -
Santa’s hometown now has its
own McDonald’s franchise —
with a drive-up window for
snowmobiles
“North Pole residents are
hard-working folks, especially in
December,” said Debbie Kinn,
who owns the franchise with her
husband, Jerry. “We’re not
nearly as cut off from the rest of
the world as some might think,
and having a McDonald’s res-
taurant allows the entire comm-
unity to be all the more a part of
the American mainstream.”
North Pole Mayor Carleta
Lewis said residents of the town
of 3,000, located about 15 miles
southeast of Fairbanks where
temperatures dip as low as 35
degrees below zero, had been
asking for two amenities: a
movie theater and a Mc-
Donald’s.
“Every city feels it has come
of age when it gets a Me
Donald’s," Lewis said.

An early Christmas gift?
MONTROSE, Colo. — A Color
ado man said he thought the
large box he received from the
U.S. Sprint long distance tele-
phone company was an early
Christmas present, until he
opened it and found a 1,400-page
phone bill inside.
The $34,000 bill was delivered
to Brad Switzer’s doorstep Mon
day. Although his two teenage
daughters are frequent phone
users, Switzer said he doubted
even they could have made that
many calls.
“I thought it was the
Ayatollah’s phone bill to Presi-
dent Reagan to organize the
(Iran) arms deal,” he joked.
Switzer called U.S. Sprint’s
Denver office, where company
officials assured him he was off
the hook.
A spokesman said Switzer had
mistakenly received U.S.
Sprint’s own phone bill for long
distance calls placed from its
Denver office, where more than
450 people work. Switzer’s ac-
count number is similar to that of
the company’s Denver office.
The company said it would
send a messenger to pick up the
bill, and Switzer would not have
to pay it.
