In some alcohol which had been spilled
on the floor. Within a few moments
the blaze had assumed really serious
proportions, and the water that was

it. a quick-witted employe seized
some pint bottles of champagne and
hurled them into the flames one after
the other, as one would use hand

had exploded the trick was done, and
the Are engines which arrived then

Flrit Electrlc-H« ted Theater.
The first theater In the world to
be heated by electricity is the Odeon,
in Buenos Ayres. A short time ago
the proprietors asked a local company
If it would undertake to heat their
premises by electricity, and, although
the management had many misgivings
as to the possibility of being able to
do so, so sanguine was the electrical
engineer of the concern, an American,
that he could devise a practical and
satisfactory system of electric-heating
apparatus for the purpose that he was
given carte blanche and immediately
proceeded to work out his scheme,
which he has done successfully.—Phil-

Tallow Candles Medicine.
In France the peasantry still stick to
medicines calculated to turn the aver-
age doctor's hair gray with horror.
Wine is an Ingredient of every pre-
scription. In fever cases it always Is
the predominant one. The French
peasant's faith in fermented grape
Juice is truly beautiful. If his children
are stricken with the measles he gives
them wine, well sweetened with honey
arid highly spiced with pepper. For a
severe cold he administers a quart of
red wine and a melted tallow candle
mixed. For scarlet or brain fever he
gives eggs, white wine and soot well
beaten together.
Forgave Ills Debtors.
From the Nashville Banner: The
last act in the life of Uncle Henry
Bowen, a venerable citizen of Hum-
phreys county, was the invocation to
"Forgive us our debts as we forgive
our debtors," and he practiced wh it
he prayed. A messenger was dis-
patched to summon all his debtors to
the bedside of the dying patriot, and
they came under the apprehension of
being called on to settle, but the old
man gave each* one the note held
against him and thus squared the ac-
count. Several thousand dollars' in-
debtedness was wiped out by his phi
lanthropy.,
