Indian Laud Owners
Washington: The house passedabill
which affects thousand of homesteaders
in Oklahoma and other states and ter-
ritories, who have either commuted their
homestead claims or have perfected
them by living upon them for five years.
The bill provides that "any person who
prior to the passage of the free home-
stead act, approved May 17, 1900, hav-
ing made a homestead entry ami per-
fected the same, and acquired title to
the land to settlement, anil who would
liave been entitled to the provisions of
the act of May 14)00. had final entry not
been made prior to that time, may make
another homestead entry of not exceed-
ing 160 acres of any of the public lands
in any state or territory subject to
homestead entry."
The purpose of the bill is to make it
apply to persons who have made final
entry, either by commutation or by the
full residence of five years upon lands
that were formerly included in Indian
reservations and have paid the Indian
price for the lauds. The bill was or-
iginally passed by the house for the re-
lief of the homesteaders on the ^ioux
Indian reservation in South Dakota.
As amended by the senate and agreed
to by the house, it is made applicable to
ail homesteaders who have completed
their entries on lands that were former-
ly included in Indian reservations. The
I ill has been recommended by the In-
