The Population or I.ondoa.
Last year'8 statistics show that tha
population of London 1r 4,484,717. For
••very 1.000 inhabitants there wer«
inirty births and 17,7 deaths. Tha
number of infants who died in their
tirst year was 158 for every 1,000
births. During the period extending
from 1887 to 1896 tha mortality was
lower than in Paris, Brussels, Amster-
dam, Berlin and Copenhagen; but in
1S97 it increased to such an extent that
it is now very little lower than that
of most European citieB, Rome In-
cluded.
Great Distance* Covered by Bird*.
The distances over which birds mi-
grate vary between wide limits, and
are often surprisingly great. The
bobolinks, which rear their young on
the shores of Lake Winnipeg In Can-
ada, and go to Cuba and Porto Rico
to spend the winter, twice traverse a
distance exceeding 2,800 miles, or more
than a fifth of the circumference of
our earth, each year. The kingbird
lays its eggs as far north as the flfty-
eeventh degree of latitude, and la
found in the winter in South America.
The biennial pilgrimages of the little
redstar. exceed 3,000 miles, and th*
tiny humming bird 2,000.

it Feeds
the Hair
Have you ever thought why
your hair is falling out ? It is
because you are starving your
hair. If this starvation continues
your hair will continue to fall.
There is on; good hair food.
It is Ayer's Hair Vigor. It goes
right to the roots of the hair
and gives them just the food
that they need. The hair stops
falling, becomes healthy, and
grows thick and long.
Ayer's Hair Vigor will do
another thing, also: it always
restores color to faded or gray
hair.

I.ov'ulnna Rice I* Red.
The rto« planters and millet* of
Southwestern Louisiana are having
Bome'troutile with the crop'this season.
For some unaccountable reason a con-
siderable percentage of it is red. This
<8 not the first season that red grains
have appeared among the white, to be
sure, but never before has the propor- I
tlon been so large. An examination |
by chemists has shown that the red
rice is equally nutritious as white.
The value of the article as a matter of
food la not in tho least injured by the
red grains. But the fact remains that
the colored grains injure the sale of
the rice they appear in.
Artificial Sight.
An inventor has perfected an elec-
trical appliance, which he claims will
suable the blind to see. This will
bring much happiness to those who
have defective eyesijyht. Another great
discovery which will bring happiness
to those whose stomachs have become
deranged, is llostetter's Stomach Bit-
ters. It is a certain cure for indiges-
tion, dyspepsia, malaria, fever and
ague. .
Doer and .Bantam.
New York Evening Sun.—The
BtrangG friendships that sometimes ex-
ist between animals that are by nature
enemies have a new variation in the
deep attachment between a dog and a
chicken. The dog had belonged to a
certain family in city days before the
suburbs were In its plan. Afterward
the attempt to raise chickens was idle
because of his serlouB objections that
were made plain whenever a stray
chicken crossed his path, unless that
one happened to be the little bantam
hen. Finally all the others were dis-
posed of, and the two odd companions
continued to spend their time together.
The little hen sits in perfect quiet
while the dog licks her feathers, or she
perches on his back while he walks.
At night he stays by preference in the
chicken house und the bantam perches
beside him.

A Itaby'a Cry.
A moderately Intimate acquaintance
with infants enables one to distin-
guish, almost from birth, three cries—
the healthy yell, by which the child ex-
ercises his lungs, the fretting of mod-
erate discomfort, and the acute cry of
pain, the latter two including at first
hunger, thirst, and dissatisfaction.
By the end of three months the nurse
or mother should be able to distin-
guish the fretting of actual physical
discomfort from that of restlessness,
and the sharp cry of pain from the
less acute announcement of thirst,
hunger, etc., while anger imparts a
characteristic quality to the cry. If
the baby is comfortably dressed and
properly fed he will be less likely to be
fretful and crying. Dr. A. L. Bene-

Slave* In New York Stite.
Immigration officials say that many
foreigners in this country arc living in
a condition of abject slavery. At Avon,

of one man, who hires them to farm-
ers and fruit growers and takes most
of tneir earnings, while those who
perform the labor get little more than
enough to eat, and are housed in
