The Letters Published Below are Self-
Explanatory.
A few days ago the waterworks
committee, consisting of Messrs.
Worrell, Friedman and Stewart,
addressed the following letter to
the secretary of the interior and
received the following reply:
The Hon. Sec y of Interior,
Washington, I). C.
Dear Sir: Mayor A. C. Holland
has appointed the undersigned as
the waterworks committee of the
city council. Our bond election is
to be held May nth, 1903. It is
the wish of the committee to begin
and bring to successful ending the
building of our waterworks with
the least possible delay, and to give
to the city of Hobart the very liest
system of waterworks that can Ix;
built for the amount allowed us.
We most respectfully and earnestly
ask you to send us a skilled engi-
neer, in whom you have the ut-
most confidence, to take charge of
and superintend the selling of the
bonds to be voted on, and the let-
ting of the contract and the build-
ing of the works. His expenses
and salary, if necessary, can lie
allowed by the council.
This is a matter of grave im-
portance to us and we wish very
much that you comply with this
request. A11 early answer, if possi-
ble, before May nth, i9°3> wil1
insure a decided vote 011 our bond
proposition. We wish to thank
you for the kind and considerate
treatment that Hobart has always
I received at the hands of your de-
partment. We are,
Truly yours,
Watkrwokks Committee.
Dri'Artment ok the Interior,
Washington, May 5, 1903.
Mr. C. C. Worrall,
Hobart, Oklahoma.
Sir: In a letter of the 25th ulti-
mo signed by yourself and Messrs.
G. W. Stewart and A. R. Fried-
man, the waterworks committee of
the city council, the department is
asked to send an engineer to take
charge of selling the bonds, letting
pwirart. and building the water-
wurkit, the expenses and salary < f
the engineer to lie allowed by the
council.
The said letter was referred to
the director of the Geological Sur-
vey, from whom I have received a
reply, dated the 2nd instant, in
which he states that his engineer
in the field has been instructed to
consult with your committee and
to advise and assist in all matters
relating to the building of the
works, and that as the Geological
Survey already has in Oklahoma
competent engineers, and will have
others who are experts in various
lines, it will probably not be neces-
sary for the city to pay for the
services and expenses of these men.
Very respectfully,
Thos. Rvan,
Acting Secretary.

Deal Consummated Friday, So Dis-
patches Say.
It would seem from the dis-
patches that the long talked of and,
to us, much dreaded merger of the
Rock Island and the Frisco has at
last been consummated.
An associated press dispatch from
New York states that President
Yoakum of the Frisco has been
made a director in the Rock Island
and that the merger was affected
without the payment of a single
cent 011 the part of anyone.
The territory of Oklahoma is per-
haps more affected by this merger
than any other part of the United
States, as there is more mileage of
the two systems in this territory
than any similar portion of the
Union. This arrangement gives
the Rock Island control of 14,348
miles of railway.
A Happy Pair.
A middle aged man wifh a stout,
healthy woman hanging to his arm
might have been seen 011 the streets
of the city Friday. To a stranger
it looked like a case of spooning of
a pair of old flames. But it was
simply a case of reconciliation, and
the two were 011 their way to their
old homestead at Harrison where
the fatted calf will lie killed and all
will be made as happy as a marriage
bell.

DOESN'T RESPECT OLD ACE-
It's shameful when youth fails to
show proper respect for old age,
but just the contrary in the case of
Dr. King's Mew l ife Pills. They
cut off maladies no matter how se-
vere at.d irrespective of old age.
Dyspepsia, jaundice, lever, consti.
