THURSDAY. JULY 19, 1800.
J. J Kukkk, Editor and Publisher.
OUR TICKET.
For President,
WILLIAM M'KINLEY,
For Vice-President,
THEODORE ROOSEVELT,
For Delegate to Congress,
DENNIS T, FLYNN,
The Transcript desires to go on
record as against fusion in any man-
ner, shape or form. It is ilie pur-
pose of the Republicans of Cleveland
county to put a full ticket in the
field, and tliis Idea meets with the
bearty sanction of all the leading
Republicans of the county.
Wi'b many voters the paramount
issue will be that prosperity is jiOod
enough awl a change not desirable,
A LEADING democrat of Norman
was offering even money this week
that New York would not give Me-
Kinley and Roosevelt more than 100,-
000 majority I
in the opinion of the Philadelphia
Press the electoral vote in November
will stand MeKinley 277, Bryan 157,
with Kentucky's thirtem in doubt.
The most careful estimates made
from present conditions vary but little
from these figures.
J. Ham Lewis, the spectacular
Washington politician, thinks Bryan
will lie elected, figuring that he will
Carry Oregon, Washington. Idaho,
Montana, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky
and Maryland. Jay Ham is well
nam<d.
"We have prosperity at home and
prestige abroad.
r,"The credit of the country has been
advanced to the highest place among
all nations.
"We have lower interests aud lower,
taxes; more money and fewer mort-
gages.
"The world's markets have been op-
ened to American products, which go
now where the) have not gone be-
fore.''—Pres dent MeKinley.
THE HORROR IN CHINA.
A war that promises to be the
greatest of modern times, or of an\
'imo, is now in its infancy. It
i he entire civilized world against the
lleatheu Chinee, and is brought about
by unheard of atrocities visited upon
our citizens,our ministers and consuls,
our women and children, and can
in ver end until the Chinaman hao
been given a lesson that he willnevei
forget. It is United States, Japan,
France, Germany, England, Austria
md Russia against China; it is Chris-
tianity against heathendom; it is
civilisation against barbarism. The
Milled forces will win in the end, but
only at the expense of tunny precious
lives and much treasure.
Chiua has a population of 400,000,-
000 and can lose a million and not
miss them. Besides, they are fight-
ing under their own vine and fig tree
while the allied forces have to send
their troops many hundreds of miles
into an unknown country and to flgli'
an unknown foe, tnda fanatical one;
one that knows nothing except to die
for its gods
But the situation must be fased,
and faced boidl)—and the United
States will doits share. Not to do
no would be to bring upon us the
well-merited contempt of every nation
on the globe. And President Mc-
Ki ley will face it, as he has faced
every other grave question that has
e me up during his administration—
in a statesmanlike, thorough!)
American manner— and the people
will back him up. A United States
citizen must be respeoted in whatevei
part of the globe he may be; the
humblest as well as the greatest.
Four Years After.
From the New York sun:
l'\ i;u years ago William Jennings
Br) an stood on a speech the frag-
ments of which had begged, borrowed
or stolen; today he stands on the neck
of bis party. Four years ago he
talked of those who would press upon
the brow of labor a crown of thorns,
to-day he is the tyrant of Democracy.
Four years ago he went up and down
through the land prophesying disaster
unless the destinies of the country
were committed into his hands,
Every prediction he made has been
dt monstraled to be false. The re-
public is prosperous and contented, is
bigger and richer than ever before.
Yet to-day Bryan announces that he
is in good voice and possessed of the
needed physical strength for another
campaign of calamity bowline. Four
The Transcript is in receipt of aj years ago, lying prophet that he was,
Judge Burwell's Ambition.
A dispatch to the Wichita Eagle
from Guthrie says; "It is reported
here that Hon.B. F. Burwell of Okla-
homa City, judge of the Third judicial
district for Oklahoma, is an applicant
for the United States district Judge-
ship of Arkansas, which was recently
made vacant by the death of Judge
Williams. .Judge Burwell has made
a brilliant record as a member of I he
Oklahoma beuch, and this coupled
with a long line of gilt-edged en-
dorsements, both eastern aud western,
it is thought, will give him a favor-
able hearing.''
.Judge Burwell would fill the posi-
tion with the utmost credit to himself
and honor to the administration.
All Sorts of Items.
A1 Jennings is writing a book on
"What 1 know about Territorial
Outlaws." It promises to be sen-
sational.
An exchange contains the follow-
ing good advice to parents wh > have
bo)s loafing around town:
"Bo)s raised up to id eness will be-
come hoodlums aud vagabonds. A
parent had belter have his boy work-
ing at some honorable employment
without pay, than have liiin, loafing
on the streets day and night with
nothing to do. Idleness is the
breeder of vice, and the crop is like!)
to be a good one where the idler
spends his time in town. If pare ts
wish to raise boys worthy of their
name the) had belter keep them busy.
A Kansas poet, in the Wichita
Eagle, his soul bursting with emotion
and ardor, sings, "I hugged her
closer and closer to me! My red blood
ran with heat intense. While the
maddened Hashes of love ran through
me, like prairie fire through a barbed
wire feuce."
Sedgwick Pantagraph: A Kansas
girl who was just leaving the house
to go to church was picked up bv n
cvclone and carried across seven
townships and entangled with barbed
wire and barn doors in great shape.
Sympathetic neighbors dug her out of
:i hedge fence and waited with breath-
less expectancy while she exclaimed
in tragic toues: "Is my hat on
straight?"
In MePherson county twenty-seven
cattle stood in a field and twenty-six
were ki led by lightning. The lone
cow that escaped was the only one
insured.
