House News.
At 2:00 o'clock the jury in the
Cummins case returned a verdict
of guilty—sentence a year and
a day in the penitentiary.
Judge "Wm. Bowles arrived
from Perry Monday and convene*
the January term of the district
court. Tuesday the criminal
cases on the docket were tried.
A verdict of guilty was given in
the case against James Hall and
he was sentenced to a year in
the penitentiary.
Thursday morning the argu-
ment of counsel were concluded
in the case of the state of Lester
Cummins charged with seduction
on a promise to marry and the
case went to the jury. The evi-
dence of Nelia Thompson and
Lester Cummins was in direct
conflict. J. B. Drennan and S.
P. Ridings had charge of the de-
fense and County attorney E. H.
Breeden and frank Walling of
the prosecution.
In the Sutton divorce case
from Wakita, Judge Bowles re-
served his dicision.

Tuesday and Judge Bird conduct-
ed the ceremony uniting in mar-
riage H. L. Cook of Stahl, Mis-
souri to Miss Zella A. Rosebery,
the daughter of Tlios. Rosebery
on route two of Medford. Lee
Cook is one of the prosperous
young Missouri farmers and Miss
Rosebery a popular Grant coun-
ty girl.
FILE FOR PLACES.
Lines Being Drawn for City
Election.
On Wednesday night there had
been but three filings for places
on the city election ticke-t. I. H.
Ruth and John Runyon had fil-
ed for re-election as members of
the board of trustees. T. J. Pal-
mer filed for trustee in the east
ward and it/is understood M. T.
Ausherman will file today. J. G.
McKelvy, clerk; H. D. Reed,
treasurer and T. P. Renshaw,
justice, intend to file for re-elec-
tion. The time for filing expires
Saturday night.

Frank Walling is Called to Mc-
Clain, Texas.
While assisting in the prosecu-
tion in the Cummins case in the
district court Wednesday, attor-
ney Frank Walling received a
telegram from McClain, Texas,
announcing that his mother, Mrs.
II. R. Walling was critically ill.
Mrs. Walling had been suffering
from the grip, but when Frank
returned ten days ago from
Texas she was much improved.
Mr. Walling left for Texas Wed-
nesday evening.
LORAINE EARLY HURT.
Popular School Teacher Breaks

Miss Loraine Early, one of the
teachers of the Medford schools.
I fell and broke her arm at her
I home near Medford Monday night
i Two bones in the arm were brok-
en. About eleven o'clock Miss
Early's brother called her out of
doors. She became frightened
and started to run when she
tripped in a hole and in the fall
her arm was fractured
Miss Early has been having a,
hard time lately. She had just |
hail her gums lanced because of]
an ulcerated tooth. Dr. Lock-
wood is in attendance.

• Mrs. I. R. Heasty received a
telegram from her husband. I. R.
Hearty, stating that he had not
invested in the bank at Esealon.
California and that he would be
back here Thursday.
It being made to appear to the
Board of Commissioners that
there is the sum of $1,554.53 in
the 1908 refund tax account and
it further appearing that same
is a special fund and that all
claims against said fund has been
paid and the purpose for which
it was created has been fully ob-
served, and there being no fur-
ther use of such fund for the
purpose for which it was created
it is ordered by the board that
$750.00 of said sum be transfer-
red to and become a part of the
Supply Fund, and that the bal-
ance to-wit $804.53 be transfer-
red to the Contingent Fund and
the Clerk is hereby ordered to
add said amounts to the estimate
now in each oe said funds, and
the Treasurer is ordered to trans-
fer said funds on his books in
accordance with the above order.

nings Bryan. As Bryan, Wilson
and Taft stood together, the
cheering was tremendous.
The parade which started from
the White House at two o'clock
was five hours in passing in re-
view before President Wilson in
the court of honor at the capitol.
Vice President Thos. Marshall
was inaugurated in the senate
chamber, and the new senators
were sworn in, transferring the
control of that body as well as
the house and presidency to the
democratic party.
In the house Speaker Clark
called ex-speaker Cannon to the
chair and bade him farewell in
an affecting scene.
"I could have been sworn in
as vice president of the United
States if I had wanted to, but
I preferred to stay with you"
said Clark in the course of the
address to the house.
Wednesday the first cabinet
meeting was held informally,
the following names being sent
to the senate for confirmation:

Elect Delegates
A. J. Batchelder, state com-
mitteeman of the progressive
party for Grant county was up
from Jefferson Wednesday. He
has issued the following call for
a convention in Medford Monday
Pursuant to a call of the State
Chairman, the Progressives of
Grant county will meet in Med-
ford on Monday, March 10th, in
mass meeting, to organize the
county, elect a County Central
Committee and officers for same,
and select ten representutivs to
•lay afternoon. After the regular
business a pleasant diversion was
the cutting out and pinning on
a line of paper patterns. Mrs.
Lockwood received the prize for
cutting out the greatest number
in a given time. Luncheon was
served before adjournment.
