INTRODUCTION
Ood meets devout inquirers as a rule
on the plane of their own thought.
How suitable it is that angels shall tell
them of the Messiah's advent! On the
other hand the same event is announced
to the astro! ogist by a star. That is in
their line for they are stur-gazors.
Scarcely does the last, note of the Hal- j
lelujah chorus die upon the still air
than the shepherds spring to their feet,
crying, "Let us go and see!" Those
unstrung harps, which the captives of
Israel hung ujion the willows by the
rivers of Babylon werejso many object
lessons to the alert minds of the Bast.
It is long, long ago since the shep-
herds near Bethlehem beheld in the
clear Eastern sky the glory of the Lord
and heard the voice of the heavenly
messenger proclaiming, "Behold, r
bring you good tidings of great joy
which shall be to all the people: for
there is born to you this day in the
city of David a Savior, whioli is Christ
the Lord."
Centuries have rolled by but the lug.
ter of that night has not passed away.
f0,"'s of that message have been
caught aud repeated by au increasing
number of God-sent messengers. They
swell in volume and majesty and
power until now from all parts of the
world the grand chorus resounds, filling
the air with its message of joy and hope
and faith and love, "Joy to the world
the Lord has come."
Christmas has become the festival of
joy and peace and good will. Why
not? God so loved the world that He
gave His only begotten Son, and gave
to mankind the greatest of all gifts, His
Son. Ever since the shepherds in the
dim light of dawn fell on their knees
and worshipped the Babe of Bethlehem
childhood has been elevated to its prop-
er place. Christmas is preeminently
the festival of the child. At no time
of the year are the happy golden days
of childhood happier or more radiant
than when we celebrate the birthday of
the Savior, the Lord. In that little
human framo lying in the mangor was
hidden the fulness of Divine possibili-
ties for the salvation of the race. The
Babe of Bethlehem, the very symbol of
frailty. of weakness, of poverty, is the
embodiment of divine strength and
boundless wealth. Were those won-1
dering, awe-stricken shepherds, were
the happy parents, able to form even a
faint idea of the greatness and vastness
of the forces that were bundled np in
that little form? Can any body fore-
cast the influence that will emanate
from the lives of the boys and girls!
that come to our homes, causing so!
much work and a great deal of worry, |
but bringing into our lives a wealth of
glory and joy. and makiug us pnrer
and richerand greator?
Love and joy and happiness and the
promise of power and great accom-
plishment they all rested in the Babe
of Bethlehem and find expression in
our Christmas joy and Christmas
life placed in harmony with God, set
in tone with the divine will; life in
which Jesus is enthroned as Lord and
King; a |ife whioli is free and strong

years ago the heavenly messenger an-
nounced "Behold, I bring you good
t dings of great joy which shall be to
all the people: for there is born to yon

Chrisr the Lord."
Is He the Lord? Has his kingdom
come. J8 his will the supreme law on
the earth, in the social world, in the
realm of commerce and politics, in our
international relation? Is he the Lord
in our Christian nations, in our Chris-
tian cities, the product of oar Christian
civilization or does sin still hold sway
over them? Are the powers of dark-
nessi still at work even in the holy
Christmas time? Every recurring
Christmas confronts us with the ques-
tion has Christianity really accomplish-
lu the two thousand years of its
existence what it really claimed to do?
Has Jesus Christ made the progress
that was thought and we think He
ought to do today? lu all His work
wlule here on earth He never built a
church or parsonage, It seems he left
that for man to do after he left, You
remember he said, "Greater works
than this shall man do."
Man looked with wonder and amaze-
ment at his task. He looked as much
surprised as if Shakespeare would have
■topped in the middle of his greatest of
M plays, like Hamlet, King Lear or
M cbeth and handed man his pen. and
said 'You finish this drama "

beneficence and in Thy glory. How

Oh! God, we rejoice that Thou hast
brought so many into covenant rela-
tion w,th Thee and with the members
ot this household. We pray that there
may spring up in them all those gra-
ciousi affections which belong to the
family. And now we beseech Thee, O
God, for the consecration which we de-
sire to make of our lives-pastor and
people; this church; all that belong to
and all the friends of this church,

The paradise of childhood, of happy,
pure and sweet childhood, with all its'
unsolved mystery, its vague yearnings,
its divinely understood promises, opens
up before our longiug gaze. Every re-
turning Christmas takes us back over
the chasm of years that are gone for-
ever, and places us again in that lost
paradise. But only for a shot time
Then the caudles of the Christmas tr-..
art, burned down, the routine of ev.-rv'

we realize, perhaps, more clearly than i

men and women of the twentieth neu-

Christinas sun is shining have ever

Prom the religions census of the world
we learn that the religion of Jesus
Christ numbers about five hundred
million adherents, How many of them
know him as a personal Savior? How
many of the eighty million inhabitants
of Christian America acknowledge him
as their Lord? How many of the
thirty two million church members in
America are really saved from their
sins by this Savior and are the loyal,
devoted subjects of the Lord? When I
say saved from their sins i do not mean
that they have felt some mystic motion
nor that they have some vague exjtecta-
