The County Seat Election
An election is called for Decem-
ber 22nd 1808 for the purpose of
re-locating the county seat of Major
county It will be the first oppor-
tunity given the people to have
their say We are placed in our
present predicament by the “perfidy
and hishonor” of the leaders of
Fairview They are directly respon-
sible for all our ills in the way of
county division and the county seat
warthat ia now on Of course John
C Major was the delegate in the
constitutional convention and he
should have stood by what be said
in bis pre-election affidavit and hs
declarations to the people but he
owed his nomination and election to
that band of pirates at Fairview and
it is probable that long before elect-
ion or even before he was nominat-
ed he bad entered into a solemn
compact with these fellows to do
just what be did do in the event of
his election We are inclined to
think in fact we are fully convinced
that such a compact was entered
into If this compact had not been
entered into but rather had Fairview
insisted on Mr Major keeping
his pledge to the people we would
not be mixed up in this trouble to-
day It is not enough for these
Fairview fellows to say that James
L Hughey would have violated his
oath to the people in the same way
had he been elected We are not
ready to believe that there are many
men so devoid of principle as to
violate a pledge backed up by sn
affidavit that he had made the peo-
ple And neither are there many
communities where the people are
onery enough to ask such a thing of
a public servant The Fairview
people and John C Major can not
clear their skirts by saying that Mr
Ilughey and the Cleo people would
have done the same thing bad Mr
Hughey been elected No man is
exoused of a crime because be enters
the plea that if be hadn’t committed
the deed some other man would
Fairview muBt stand for the indict-
ment They went before the public
and made it emphatic that there would
be no county division if they won
out in the election They denounc-
ed Cleo forever wanting division
and made the claim that to cut
Woods county into two parts and
establish an additional county gov-
ernment would increase the taxes
uutil it would be more of a burden
than the poor tax payer could bear
It was just such a deception that
won the election for them A ma-
jority of the people at that time
were against division and the argu
ment put up by Major and his man-
agers caught them It was a confi-
dence game played on the people
They meant to do the very opposite
of what they preached as their sub-
sequent actions show 'and now they
come before the people with their
fingers dripping with filth and with
perjury on their lips and treachery
in their hearts and ask to be trusted
still further The people owe it to
themselves in defense of their man-
hood and pocket books to take from
Fairview that which she acquired by
corruption falsehood and deceit
and give it to another
Don’t Work Deception
' When a legal voter signs au affi-
davit asking that a certain town be
put on the ballot to be voted on at
the election December 22nd for
county seat he should sign no
other affidavit unless he desires his
vote to count for nothing We
understand that parties are going
around over the country trying to
get those who have signed affidavits
for Cleo to sign for some other
town telling the voter that be can
do this and it would be all right It is
a deception aud should be stopped
The argument is going the rounds
so we are told that this county can
be cut in two and made into two
counties This can not be done
for the constitution absolutely pro-
hibits it and there is no use advan-
cing such an argument Those
who are working that racket are as
we verily believe in the employ of
Fairview and they should come out
like men throw off the mask and
make a fight in the open Any
man has a right to vote for Fair-
view if he chooses but he has no
right to deceive mislead and pre-
tend He stultifies his manhood
enough by voting for such a town
without adding anrotber despicable
thing to bis action
The soribbler of Fairview says
that Old Woods county was “stag-
gering under a huge debt of 206-
00000” and that the debt of Major
county amounts to “a paltry 1605-
05 due to New Woods county”
That is a good showing for Major
eounty if true but it isn’t true
But just wait until Fairview gets
the county seat fastened there and
gets her court house built and that
High School she has promised Ames
for county seat support and the
“Golden Road” finished and a thou-
sand and one other grafts she has in
mind and the debt of Major county
will make that “staggering load” of
Old Woods county look like thirty
cents
Quite A Liar Himself
When Cleo pushers said Fairview
bad to have the Orlenta bridge In or-
der to get the water mains across the
river they lied Fairview has her
water mains all laid when they said
the bridge would cost 6000 they lied
When they said the county seat elect-
ion would come on the same day as
the general election they lied when
thev said Rlngwood would not be in
the race they lied A town that
must depend solely upon lies to get
votes must be in a bad way Voters
what do you think about it— Fairview
Scribbler
The Fairview scribbler is getting
more reckless with his statements
snd more careless with the truth all
the time The “Cleo pushers” never
at any time declared that “Fairview
had to have the Orients bridge to
gel her water mains across the
river” What Cleo parliessaid was
this that if Fairview wanted to come
across the river for her water supply
the county must not aid her by
building a bridge for her water
mams that such a bridge was not
necessary for travel and should not
be constructed simply because Fair-
view wanted to utilize it for their
water works system The voters
of the county took the same view of
it and buried the proposition under
a decisive majority By the way
those pirates of Fairview have
howled over the defeat of their
bridge proposition it is evident
that it cut deep aud that there was
a bigger scheme at the bottom of it
than people imagined As to the cost
of the bridge that has never been
determined The bridge was not
built so the scribbler has no proof
that any one at Cleo baa lied about
the bridge No one in Cleo ever
informed anybody that the county
seat election would be held on the
day of the general election "but on
the other hand they gavp all inquir-
ers the straight of it and told them
that there must be a special election
called For our part we would ob-
ject to it being called on the day of
the general election The re-location
of a county seat is a questiou
that should he settled entirely by
itself and reasonable people are
bound to admit that the law making
it necessary to call a special election
to re-locate a county scat is a wise
provision Now as to Ringwood
being a candidate for county seat
We got our information from lead-
ing citizens of the town and commu-
nity around it The people of
Ringwood have a perfect right to
put their town in the running if
they want to If it is a candidate
and should come out high man
against Fairview we shall do all we
can to make it the county seat
Lying and Deceit Their Trade
W B Tyler the Bado merchant
Is one of the signers to the petition
calling a county seat election who now
regrets bis hasty action He says the
party who presented the petition to
him stated that the election would
come on the same date as the general
election therefore would count next
to nothing Wherever Cleo’s repre-
sentatlvhs went they lied to obtain
signatures If they lie to obtain sig-
natures to a petition to call an
election can they be trusted to tell
the truth when soliciting votes for
Cleo for county seat? Better investi-
gate every statement they make be-
fore accepting it— Fairy lew Leader
After carefully looking over a
true and correct copy of the list of
names which appear on the petition
sent to the Governor to call the
county seat election we fail to find
the name ot W B Tyler of Bado
There is no such signature on the
petition now on file with the Gov-
ernor We not only scanned the
list of names but we interviewed
Mr Eli U Griffith the only man
from Cleo who went out into that
southwest country for signatures
and be informed us that he did not
solicit any such man as W B Ty-
ler and furthermore of all the par-
ties he met up with ' and talked to
about the petition he never told one
ot them that the election for county
seat would be held on the day set
for the general electiou but that in
every instance when a man mention-
tinned such a thing he disabused
his mind of it by telling him that
the law governing county seat elect-
ion prevented anything of the kind
The statement that “wherever
Cleo’s representatives went they
lied to obtain signatures” is such an
nnjust and outrageous statement that
no honest truthful man would make
it There was nothing but honora-
ble means employed in securing
that petition and it is a good one
and can not be successfully assailed
by all the scurvy thimble riggers in
Fairview “Investigate” by all
means We court investigation
If that roan Tyler has been here any
length of time he knows the lying
and deception and corrupt methods
that were employed by Fairview
in securing the oonnty seat without
any investigation on his part If
he hasn’t been here long enough to
know these things he can know
them by an investigation While
it is all right and we ask it to “in-
vestigate” the statements made by
Cleo in this county seat struggle it
would be a wise precaution to do a
little investigating before you accept
the statement of that bunch of pir
ates at Fairview
