Annexation and Statehood
The more the Indian move-
ment in the Indian Territory di-
rected against single statehood
is considered the more clearly it
appears that the only object held
in view by the men behind it is
an indefinite constitution of the
territorial relation A few of
these men have acquired im-
mense fortunes as a result of
the complicated relations exist-
ing between the tribes and the
federal government While the
tribal governments will pass out
of existance in less than a year
the perpetuation of a territorial
government will better serve the
purpose of these men than pass-
ing under a state government in
combination with Oklahoma
whose action they might not be
able to control on lines of their
own interest In addition to
these individuals are a number
of great corporations which have
acquired large holdings and
large privileges from the tribes
and which will aim to continue
and extend these under territor-
ial government
It is well to understand this
material fact in the situation in
the territory before the time is
reached for dealing with the in-
dividuals and corporations in-
terested in a movement clearly
and obviously opposed to the in-
terests of the Southwestern
country The so-caBed Indian
convention was one behind which
lurked quite a large number of
white men in the territory serv-
ing either their own interests or
that of the corporations employ-
ing them Some eminent In
dians participated in the pro-
ceedings but these are not above
suspicion of promoting (either
consiously or unconsciously) the
same objects aimed at by the
white men who incited the call-
ing of the convention and were
the active figures behind all of its
work These Indians and these
white men understand the im-
possibility of erecting two small
states between Texas and Kan-
sas One state in that region
can be and will but it is doing
violence to the intelligence of
these men to believe that they do
not understand that the part of
the country east of the Missis-
sippi will never permit the crea-
tion of two little states in that
section
But if under the guise of In-
dian protest and opposition the
white schemers should succeed
in deferring single statehood for
several years annexation then
becoms the only solution The
selfish interests which are now
seeking protection and enlarge-
ment may in a few years have
fixed themselves as well as it is
possible for them to be fixed un-
der the territory and their in-
terests may then lie in the pro-
motion of statehood Then will
come annexation to Oklahoma if
single statehood can be defeated
now It remains yet to be seen
whether the business men
of the territory would
rather make a bargain
now or postpone the business
until Oklahoma can drive a hard-
er bargain with them than she
can at this time Private inter-
ests will profit by the postpone-
ment but public interest will
suffer— St Louis Globe-Dem
