A RETURN TO BARBARISM.
Is the United States so far ahead of
other countries in civilization? Report
comes from Delaware of a return to the
whipping post as a means of punish-
ment. -Great crowds witnessed the cruel,
dehumanizing spectacle of men, men
mind you, citizens of the glorious Repub-
lic of the United States, being stripped
to the waist, tied to a post and merci-
lessly lashed, for the petty offense of lar-
ceny, while "high financers" despoil the
people of millions and go free.
They excuse themselves for their bru-
tal acts by declaring it to be effectual
punishment; effectual punishment in-
deed! The inquisition was effectual
punishment, to gauge men's eyes out of
their heads, reiul then, limb from limb
was considered effectual punishment a
century and a half ago, (but was it just
was it human?) and is a return to the1
cruelties of the dark ages incompatible I
with the boasted fraternity and brother- !
hood of the twentieth century. Let us
not dishonor our forefathers.
