TETANUS: AN AVOIDABLE
KILLER
Tetanus or “lockjaw" strikes
relatively few persons but
when it does the results are
deadly More often than not
it kills If it doesn’t kill the
victim suffers agonizing pain
and must undergo treatment
that in itself is life-endangering
Deaths from tetanus are es-
pecially tragic because the di-
sease is totally unnecessary
It can be prevented by teta-
nus toxoid -- one of the safest
and most effective of vaccines
With the outdoor season at
hand Oklahomans should
make doubly sure they have
adequate protection against
tetanus There is a risk to the
unvaccinated every time you
receive a cut or puncture type
injury The tetanus bacillus
doesn’t just lurk in barnyards
nor do most cases result from
stepping on a rusty nail Un

FANTASTIC FRUSTRATING
AND FRIGHTENING
The new “surtax” on In-
comes is advertised out of
Washington as a cure for in-
f'ation It isn’t It may help a
little but unless the massive
waste and proliferous spend-
ing of the Federal Govern-
ment is cut drastically (far
beyond the “token” $6 billion
that is being talked about in
the White House) inflation
vilJ continue at a dollar-kil-ling
pace Deficit spending
and rising commodity prices
caused in part by forced
wage increases if not halted
will wreck our nation — and
everybody will suffer
We’ll talk about the wage-
lise cost-push inflation in a
subsequent column but we
shall devote this one to the
bad management of the Fed-
eral Government throughout
the past 20 years Congress-
man Otto E Passman of Lou-
isiana’s 5th District is one of
the most unpopular men in
Washington with the waste-
ful spenders He has just en-
raged them again with publi-
cation of a resume of what
bad governmental manage-
ment has meant to the na-
tion Bince 1050 (under Re-
publican and Democratic Pre-
sidents and Congresses) Here
are some of the unpleasant
facts:
Bad Management
PUBLIC DEBT: The public
debt of the United States Go-
vernment has risen from $257
billion in 1950 to $345 billion
in 1967 (and will probably hit
$360 billion this year)
This debt imposes a mortgage
on the income and property
of every American The in-
terest alone on the 1967 debt
amounted to approximately
$14 billion That’s more than
was spent on the entire cost
of the Federal Government for
the three years 1928-29-30 or
the three years 1931-32-33
There are 133 nations in the
world The combined in-
debtedness of all 133 is $43
billion less than the debt ac-
cumulated by the United
States Government

Tetanus bacillus the teta-

(poison) upon entering the
body through an open wound
The toxin spreads into the
nervous system affecting the
brain and causing convulsions
Neck stiffness and contrac-
tion of the jaw muscles the
early symptoms prompted
the popular name for the di-

While the vaccine produces
no ill effects treatment of the
unvaccinated is another story
The only known way to pre-

GOLD HOLDINGS: Since
1950 our storehouse of gold
at Fort Knox (serving as the
anchorage for our monetary
system) has been reduced
from $22 billion to $105 bil-
lion And the drain continues
adding to the instability of
the dollar over the same per-
iod the other countries of the
world have increased their
gold holdings by $16 billion

SHORT TERM DOLLAR
CLAIMS (Accounts Payable):
Short term dollar claims
against the United States
Government — obligations to
foreign countries and finan-
cial institutions — have risen
from $8 billion in 1950 to $35
billion an increase of nearly
$27 billion This is another of
the prime factors in the con-
tinuing shakiness of the dol-
lar in world monetary circles
U S BALANCE OF PAY-
MENTS: This boiled down to
understandable terms means
the difference between our
exports and imports of money
and goods When we have a
deficit in the balance of pay-
ments we are spending more
money outside the U S than
we are getting in from the
outside Such a deficit en-
dangers the whole economy
of a country Since 1950 there
has been only one year in
which we did not have a de-
ficit in this vital balance and
our true fiscal situation
(though largely hidden) has
worsened each year The year
1967 showed a near-record de-
ficit of $36 billion and the
18 years since 1950 the total
deficit runs to $369 billion

from tetanus antitoxin equals
the number of deaths from
the disease itself Yet if you
have not been immunized and
are in danger of succumbing
to tetanus the only alterna-
tive is to give antitoxin
Women are least likely to
have adequate tetanus pro-
tection today Chances are
your children received teta-
nus toxoid as a part of their
routine immunization pro-
gram Most men got their
shots in the military service
or in industry Even so they
may need boosters
Most physicians recom-
mend two toxoid shots one
month apart followed by a
booster injection a year later
Adults then should have a
booster shot approximately
every four years and at the
time of an injury unless the
last booster came within the
previous six months

But let us in a final word in

pause to every voter
