POSOPONED
Three weeks ago there appeared in
the Journal a call for a convention
- of the people of Woods county for
the purpose of d’scussing the situ-
ation as regarding statehood and to
elect delegates to an inter-territorial
convention This call has caused
considerable comment as well as
amusement to the editor of the Jour-
nal for it has been a pleasure to
watch some of the republican pa-
pers of the county go after "us" It
seems queer too the way the thing
has lined up Eyery paper in the
county run by an editor who has au
appointive ’ office has been dead
against the convention Why? Be-
cause they don’t care whether we
get statehood at the next session of
congress or not Statehood would
mean at least a change in the con-
gressman and invaribly their heads
would go off Some of these fellows
can see far enough ahead to see this
On the other hand all the remain-
ing papers in the oounty endorse
the move These fellows who con-
trol the organization and have the
offices have made such a roar that
Uncle Bill French has called a spec-
ial secret meeting of the county cen-
tral committee at Alva tomorrow
for the purpose of setting down on
us but we will beat them to it one
day and call the convention off in-
definitely by the same power with
which it was called We want to
remark right here though that we
still favor a constitutional conven-
tion and will work for one but
rather than he excommunicated by
the organization and be placed in
the light of a bolter we will take
advantage of the point of order and
vote with the boys to kill the thing
reserving the right to call the mat-
ter up again when we please
We are for statehood because the
republican party is pledged to it
and do not care how it comes The
plan adopted by our leaders in past
sessions of congress failed inglorious-
ly and we are one of the many who
believe the long suffering ano pat-
ience should come to an end and the
people should demand their rights
under the constitution All this
talk about there being no precedent
' for a constitutional convention is
foolishness for nearly half of the
states admitted to the union have
come in only after they made their
constitution and demanded of con
grees their rights The trouble Is
there are a lot of fellows In the ter
ritory who control the republican
We are for statehood and it makes
little difference bow it comes
Much comment has resulted from
the call for a statehood convention
at Cleo April 19 and great interest
has been excited The meeting
promises to be well attended— Headlight
Jack Ross of the Alva Courier
says the statehood question is pure-
ly a matter of politics and the de-
mands of the people or the rights of
a commonwealth under the consti-
tution cut no figure In that case
what will § constitutional conven-
tion hurt?
FINCH SPEAKS OUT
The most crazy idiotic and sense-
less dispatch ever sent out from
Washington was the one appearing
in the papers Friday in reference to
the proposed constitutional conven-
tion to be held here The senator
interviewed whoever - he may be
contradicted himself backed water
and stbod on his senatorial dignity
If there is anything that will cause
the people of Oklahoma to endeavor
to ignore congress no matter how
foolish such an act may be it is just
such talk as this senator baa put up
The gentleman of the senatorial to-
ga says that "the people of Oklaho-
ma must cot attempt to bullcoze
congress" Certainly not If there
is any bulldozing done our chief leg-
islative body reserves that right
Again the senator says that the mat-
ter most be handled intelligently
that because other other states have
held such conventions prior to their
admission is no reason Oklahoma
should that it is impossible to hold
fair elections in Oklahoma that the
people of Oklahoma should remain
passive eta etc Such rot contin-
uing indefinitely The people of
Oklahoma have taken exceptions to
the fact that the matter has been
handled intelligently hence contem
plate taking the matter in their own
bands This fair territory is not
going to hold a constitutional con-
vention simply on acoount of pre-
cedent but because the people be-
lieve it is the only possible way to
convince congress that we mean bus-
iness and are entitled to admission
In the matter of fair elections con
gress should sweep her own stales’
doors and recall the fact to mind
that in some of the southern states
there has not been a fair election
since Lincoln collected the shackles
Remain passive! REMAIN PAS-
SIVE! In the name of Ctesar’s bald
beaded ghost what dods the senator
want? If congress would take her
mind from our poor unrepresented
subjects in the Pbillipines allow
the Cubans to work out their own
salvation forget the Monroe doc-
trine and the dinky South American
republics and turn her attention to
some of her own enslaved taxed-without-representation
subjects she
would sleep more at nights enjoy
better health and would Ilye longer

RENFREW BATS HOLD IT
The Cleo Journal two weeks ago
published a call for a “non-partisan
mass convention of the citizens of
Woods connty for the purpose of
electing delegates to and to devise
means for calling and bolding a ter-
ritorial convention that shall be
authorized to call a convention for
framing and adopting a state
stltutlon" The convention has
been called to meet in Cleo Wednes-
day April 19th The idea is a good
one and every citizen who wants
statehood and can arrange to go to
Cleo on that date should be there
Even the U 8 Congress sometimes
needs to be shown Oklahoma and
Indian Territory is a commonwealth
that is big -enough to show them
Woods county is big enough to start
the ball rolling then why not let ’er
roll ' Tbs Record heartily endorses
the movement and w believe that
thi feeling is general '
Ed Marchant of the Aline Cbron-
osoope says editorially in last issue
"Congress has failed to do justice
where justice Is deserved The peo-
ple of the United States are with
Oklahoma Oklahoma has waited
for the promise of politicians to be
made good - None have reached
fulfillment It is improbable that
either party cou'd make a success-
ful campaign with a promise of state-
hood for a battle cry It la high time
then that tbe people should take the
matter in band
"Tbe Way to do this is to bold a
constitutional convention Let it
be the action of tbe two territories
Tbe friends of the people and those
loyal to Oklahoma will stand for it
Pomposity j and promise ' will be
against it"
The Oklahoma City Times Journal
says "The Woods county boys are
Doted for doiDg things and it is high-
ly probable that this step will be a
success"- -
Tbe State Capital says "Governor
Ferguson when asked about the mat-
ter said be had not yet received bis
invitation to attend the convention
as tbe call implies but that is his
mind tbe Woods county fellows will
make good”
John Bishop of the Cleo Chieftain
seems to be foreninst it Hear him
"We are of the opioion that not a
single prominent republican was ev-
er counseled about tbe matter The
republicans of this county are dis-
posed to let tbe democrats run it"
Ed Marcbant is regarded as pretty
good republican authority and there
are others
‘Why wait for Congress or for
Cannon? Oklahoma should take
5 rant's advice and push things
Let's have tbe convention — Alva
