The Lawyer
Hmay bar been to college
And bare practiced at th bar
And be familliar with tb precedents
Of th oourt both near and far
U may have read th Journal
And all the book he ever aaw
But still b cannot fathom
Thla department mad law
Had Blaolutone and Kent
Been up in their work
And taken a few tip
From aome department clerk
They might have told ua how
W would bare to "gee” and
“haw”
When we come to pratice
This department mad law
But these noble jurist
Peace be to their bones
Had been laid to their rest
Beneath monumental atones
Many years before
Thing got ao raw
That the lawyer had to practice
This department made law
Put on a pleasant smile and quit
kicking this world haa enough
trouble in it without yours
Wonder if Dr Leon R Hill of
Boonville Mo is a relative of the
“Mysterious Stranger”?
The Oklahoma legislature haa
passed a bill providing for the pun
ishment of offioial boodling The
Folk idea in politios seems to be
contagious
If JudgeBaker and P B Hopkins
don't sue the Muskogee Phoneix for
libel they have an utter disregard
for the manner in whioh their feet
are carioatured before the publio
Representative Curtis of Kansas
has offered a resolution providing
that the house recognize C E Foley
of Eufaula as delegate from Indian
Territory during the remainder of
the present session
Row Marrs of the Yinita Chief
tarn has rolled up his sleeves and
waded into the Douglass-Raymond
muddle And what is strange
about the matter is that he is on
the side of the Colonel Truly
these territorial scraps do make
strange bed-fellows
Every time you have an inclina-
tion to siy somitliug mm abrut
yournaigabirs it wjuld ba wise for
you to hold your tongue until you
have time to go and look into a look-
ing glass and study your own con-
duct You might perhaps come to
the conclusion that if the world
could be charitable with you you
oould in turn t charitable with the
world
This is a harsh world Just as Bird
McGuire is showing off at his best
and shaping his political lig'itaniig
rod to attract the senatorial light-
ening that is soon oxpooted to play
over this new state the Muskogee
Demororat bobs up and remarks:
“Mr McGuire looks to m more like
a good hotel advanoe agent than a
congressman The railroads probably
appreciate his services also”
' We are Informed by Rev F L
Sohaub of Dwight Mission that he
will begin in a few days to publish
the Mission paper oalled Cherokee
Gospel Tidings This is by no
moans a new depature at the mis-
slon the paper was published at the
mission last y r and wu suspended
on aooount of the continued illness
of Mr Sohaub This is the only relU
gibus publication ever published in
the Cherokee language and we are
glad to see it rovived
“A special to the Phoenix” from
Washington says that Assistant
Secretary Ryan has directed Mr J
Gao Wright to us more diplomacy
ik th adminstration of hie office
Wonder if that dispatoh is direct
from th Col himself?
From th manner in which th
“Mysterious Stranger” is conducting
himself at Jefferson City these days
it is probable that th voters in old
Missouri will have enough of him
long before th time arrive to vote
again in thatatat
The increased interest taken in
the Enterprise each week along the
line of the K C S road is very en-
couraging indeed and we are lead to
believe that it will aooomplieh all
that we expected of it in tbe way of
up-building and developing this rich
section of the Beautiful Indian Ter-
ritory While a large number of Okla-
homa politicians were in Washing-
ton looking after the interests of
the statehood bill the brewery at
Oklahoma City failed and now some
Indian Territory papers are unkind
enough to think the failure was
perfectly natural considering that
these gentlemen were absent so
long
E BGuthrey was down from
Marble one day last week He re-
ported Marble booming and the
way deeds are being recorded we
believe him — SallisawGaxette
That right brother believe the
records even if you do doubt the
editor Bye the way how many
Marble City deeds have been record-
ed in the last month? We have been
ao busy that we oould not take
time to oountthem
On the 94th of this month Sen-
ator Beverage said: “The senate
shall vote on the statehood bill next
Friday and it ehall vote favorably
or the blame for the delay ehall be
plaoed where it belongs and the peo-
ple of Indian Territory will know
who are the men that are denying
to the citizens of the southwest that
which is theirs by right”
This looks as though we may
yet hope for some action on the
statehood bill at this session
The Indians
The Rev George F McAfee in an
article on tbe North American In-
dians says:
In 1816 Elias Boudinot at that
time considered tbe best authority
on Indian statistics published the
names of nearly three hundred dis
tinct tribes and estimated the nnm
ber in N orth America to be anywhere
from two to live trillion Accept-
ing the smaller figures as approxi-
mately oorrect the population in the
territory embraced in the United
States and territories would probably
be not far from one and a quarter
millions
Theoensus of 1890 gave in round
numbers 256000 as the total popula-
tion During the sixty-four years
since 1818 accepting Mr Boudinot's
estimate aa correct there has been
a loss of 804000 souls This is an
average annual loss of 11000 Since
Boudinot's day other statisticians
from a careful study of the Indians
deolare that at no time has there
been to exoeed 600000 within the
bounds of what are now the United
States and Territories If this
be oorrect then there has been an
average annual loss of over five
thousand souls since 1816
Whioh ever estimate is oorrect
the picture is truly sad enough
Many have undertaken to aooount
for tbii great lose but none have
succeeded Whatever other causes
may have operated ruthless wars
and tbe introduction of the worst
forms of disease known to civiliza-
tion ore wpc mills fer much of it
The policy of the Government dealing
with the Indians as tribes and not
as individuals aa ward and not as 1
citizens was at fault Tbls policy
too ofton supported by the sentiment
of tbe Church repelled rather than
attracted the Indian and hastened
his destruction
