lTIflR5T BOY
Joins Ship and ‘Takes Place as
“Cadet Edward”
i
Eldest 8on of King George Aged Six
teen Yeare le Highly Popular—
Much Like Other Eng
lleh Lads
' London — Prince Edward of Wales
Who has been “the flfst boy of Eng-
and” for 16 years has gone to Join
his ship at Dartmouth and take his
place as Cadet Edward of Wales
'During the funeral ceremonies of hts
grandfather King Edward he was a
prominent figure not only because he
is heir to the throne but because he la
highly popular
A typical Anglo-Saxon lad Is Prince
Edward now called the duke of Corn-
wall and soon to be formally made
the prince of Wales He Is fair haired
blue eyed and sturdy of limb the pic-
ture of health strength and good tem-
per ”
From babyhood he has been popu-
lar' His doings and sayings have
been chronicled and half the mothers
of England put thefr sons Into white
sailor suits like those chosen by the
princess of Wales for her son Yet
admiration does not seem to have
spoiled him at all He Is still a frank
simple EngtlBh boy with a bright
smile a pleasant manner and an In-
fectious laugh
Not only Is Prince Eddie a public
favorite but he is a hero In hla own
family His three small brothers and
one sister look forward to his holidays
as festive occasions Hts father and
mother King George and Queen Mary
although they are rather strict With
their children as a rule often relax
discipline for their oldest son and are
as proud of him as any middle class
parents of their first-born
Even at school Prince Edward la
popular and one has to be more than
a prince to be a favorite at an Eng-
lish school One has to be an all-
round expert at games and sports a
generous open-handed good fellow
with plenty of courage and a love of
fair play
Prince Edward has always been a
sportsman He could ride his pony
when he was five and on his seventh
Princw Edward of Wales
birthday King Edward gave him a
bicycle Swimming lessons at the
Bath club came next and a little later
cricket football and boxing and now
he Is one of the first class cross-country
runners of England '
Before he was ten he had handed
over hla ordinary nursery toyB to his
younger brothers and was giving all
the time he could spare from lessons
and exercises to a fleet of model bat-
tleships which bad been given him by
hts father It was the time of the
Russian-Japanese war and the young
prince with model guns forts and
maps of the scene of the campaign
was follow'g each move and fighting
mimic battleB with hla fleet Later
King George anxious to encourage his
son's love of the sea gave him a
lnrge model brig - This Is kept at Vir-
ginia water In charge of an old sailor
A Btory Is told of hts early days at
Osborno which seems to prove that
the prince Is not without commercial
Instincts He had written home to his
mother for extra pocket money which
she refused to send and' so he wrote
a long letter to his grandmother beg-
ging her to help him out Queen Alex-
andra wrote a long letter reproving
hint for extravagance
To her surprise Prince Edward who
hates letter writing like a normal
boy Immediately answered lr lottor
and asked many questions She an-
swered them only to receive another
letter from her grandson At last the
truth came out that the prince was
selling the queen's autograph letters
to his schoolmates for money to spend
at the tuckshop
' In his lessons PiMnce Edward does

A BURNING ERUPTION FROM

"Four years ago I suffered severely
With a terrible eczema being a mass
of sores from bead to feet and for six
weeks confined to my bed During
that time I suffered continual torture
from Itching and burning After being
given up by my doctor I was advised
to try Cuticura Remedies After the
flrst hath with Cuticura Soap and ap-
plication of Cuticura Ointment I en-
joyed the flrst good sleep during my
entire illness I also used Cuticura
Resolvent and the treatment was con-

The Lost Chords
The village concert was to be a
great affair They- had the singers
they had the program sellers they
had the doorkeepers and they would
doubtless have the audience All they
needed was the piano but that they
lacked Nor could they procure one
anywhere
At last the village organist learned
that one was possessed by Farmer
Hayseed who lived "at the top o’ the
Mil” Forthwith he set out with two
men and a van
“Take It an' welcome” said Hay-
seed cordially “I've no objections
'long as ye put ‘Pyenner by Hayseed'
on the program”
They carted It away
' “An’ I wish ’em joy of It” mur-
mured Mrq Hayseed as the van disap-
peared from sight
"Wish ’em Joy of It” repeated Hay-
seed "What d’ye mean?”
"Well I" mean I only 'ope they’ll
find all the notes they want” replied
the good woman " ’Cos ye see when
I wanted a bit o’ wire I alius went to
the old planner for it”
It Is a Mistake
Many have the idea that anything
will sell if advertised strong enough
This Is a great mistake True a
few sales might be made by advertis-
ing an absolutely worthless article hut
It is only the article that Is bought
again and again that pays An ex-
ample of the big success of a worthy
article la the enormous sale that has
grown up for Cascarets Candy Cathar-
tic This wonderful record is the result
of great merit successfully made known
through persistent advertising’ and the
mouth-to-mouth recommendation given
Cascarets by Its friends and users -
Like all great successes trade pi-
rates prey on the unsuspecting public
by marketing fake tablets similar in
appearance to Carcarets Care should
always he exercised In purchasing well
advertised goods especially an article
that has a national sale like Cascar-
ets Do not allow a substitute to be
palmed off on you
Foxy Hiram
"Well now If that ain’t surprising!”
ejaculated Mrs Ryetop as she shaded
her eyes with her hand “There goes
old Hiram Skinflint and rather than
step on a poor black ant he picked it
up and I bet be la going to drop It
somewhere out of the reach of dan-
ger" Her husband laughed knowingly
“Not Hiram Skinflint Mandy He’ll
go dowu to Jed Weatherby’s general
store and order a pound of granulated
sugar Then while Jed Is looking an-
other way he’ll drop the ant among
the grains and tell Jed as long as his
sugar has ants In it be ought to sell it
at half price Like aa not he'll try to
get Jed to throw In two or three
raisins and a yeast cake You don't
know Hiram Skinflint”
