——
shouting partner
LOS ANGELES — Gary Arnold gained fame (of a
sort) when a fellow Republican told him: "Shut up!"
That was on Oct. 6 at the White House. The Repub-
Ucan who told Arnold to shut up was President Rea-
gan
Now fellow Republicans (but not Reagan this
time) have told Arnold: "Thanks."
This made Arnold angry and embarrassed the Re-
publicans involved. Arnold, one may recall, was run-
ning for Congress in California's 16th District, which
includes Santa Cruz, and was invited to a White
House meeting of GOP candidates. It was supposed
to be a sort of pep rally, with the president as chief
cheerleader
But Arnold, whose political stance is somewhat
more conservative than the president's, irked Rea-
gan with aggressive questions about taxes and
Taiwan. That’s when the president made Arnold fa-
mous.
But fame is fleeting and, on Nov. 2, Arnold lost the
election to the incumbent Democrat, Leon Panetta.
Shortly afterwards, he got a nice letter from Tirso
del Junco, chairman of the California Republican
Party.
Arnold thought that sounded a trifle insincere.
