Rush forfeited a college scholarship-to
help support her family, married at 19 and 4
quickly had four children. Her husband,
now 49, joined the Marines at 17, later fin-
ished high school, became a mechanical
draftsman and a volunteer softball league
manager. "
When we first got married, we were in
the pursuit of happiness," Rush said wist-
fully. "We wanted to have a home, good job
and fun over the weekends "
"It wasn’t until the civil rights move-
ment . . .," Mrs Rush said, ".when I began
to do things after the kids went to bed or
when I was able to get a baby sitter so I
could leaflet churches on Sundays."
Mrs Rush worries about her childre,
but said, "I hope what I've given my kids ts
something that's equally important to
them as my being there to do the laundry. I
hope that I've given them a sense of life as
something that's challenging and import
ant."
