HOLD GOOD ROADS MEETING AT
BRIDGEPORT—TO BUILD BRIDGE
To Build New Highway from Oklahoma City to San Francisco
—Bids are to be Opened May 19th for Erection of a
Bridge Across the South Canadian River
The Western Oklahoma State
Roads Association held a" special
meeting in Bridgeport Tuesday
of this week. The main object
of the meeting was to discuss the
subject of a bridge over the South
Canadian river just north of
Bridgeport.
Blaine and Canadian counties
have each promised $4,000 to be
paid toward the expense of the
erection of the bridge, providing
the bridge is built during the
year of 1914—this year.
It has been estimated that the
bridge proper, not counting the
approaches, will cost about $12,-
000. This leaves a deficiency of
$4,000 that will have to come
from other sources. The com-
mittee in charge of the proposi-1
tion had assurances, some weeks;
ago, that the government would
appropriate sufficient money out
of the Indian tribal funds to make
up this amount but recently have
found out that this can't be de-;
pended upon. . I
The association instructed theirj
secretary to immediately adver-
tise for bids on this bridge. Bids
are to be opened may 19th.
The member of the executive |
committee from Sayre made a
nice talk in which he explained
the object of the good roads
meeting to be held at Sayre on
Wednesday and Thursday, May
20th and 21st. He stated that
the main object of the meeting j
was to line out the work of build-
ing the east and west highway
from Oklahoma City to San Fran-
cisco, Calif. He said that this
road would be built this year and
that it would be marked with yel-
low poles from one end of the
road to the other. This would be
the southern route to California
and would be a great benefit to
all of the towns through which it
would be built.
The meeting at Bridgeport ad-
journed to meet in Sayre on May
20th and 21st.
Geary now has an opportunity
to get one of the big highways
and all good roads boosters who
can get away should attend this
meeting at Sayre.
Let's get behind this move-
ment and help it all we can.

Fred Baker, one of Blaine
county's most prosperous farm-
ers, living north of Geary, was
in town last Friday and informed
Ben Lowman, the Ford agent,
that he had decided that he would
become a Ford owner, and left

new touring car—they're all buy-
ing Ford cars, because they're
the best and cost less to operate
and repair them.

woman of sterling qualities. Mr.
Handley is head barber in Mr.
Quayle's shop and has made
Geary his home for several years,
and is an honorable, industrious
young man. These young people
have the congratulations and best
wishes of their many friends.
They will be at home at the
Bishop residence for the present.
About one month ago the North
Healdton Oil and Gas Co., was or-
ganized by a number of the lead-
ing business men of Geary and
vicinity. The company was char-
tered under the state laws at
$25. 000. 00. They now have
valuable holdings in the Loco,
Ringling and Healdton fields.
Besides this they have quite a
number of leases in the Etna
district of this county. . IUWV
As a result of the good busi- wi^ mean something handsome
r —— —! to the lucky investors.
That the holdings of this com-
pany are valuuble is evidenced
by the following oil news item
published by the Daily Oklaho-
man under date of April 30, this
week:
Ringling, Okla - That an
attempt will be made by t h e
agents of the big oil concerns
of the United States to gain
control of the Healdton field
by purchasing the holdings
of the present owners, where
possible, is understood to be
the programme at the pres-
ent time. The $50,000,000
charter taken out last week
by an eastern syndicate may
be intended as t h e purchas-
ing capital of t h e aforesaid
concern, or, in case they fail
to buy holdings, to rush a
pipe line into the field t o
secure the oil. Several o f-
fers have already been made.
New companies are being
organized daily to hold onto
tracts in the Healdton field
and be ready when the u p
grade starts. The Healdton
field is considered by oil men
generally, to be one of the
biggest in extent yet discov-
ered west of the Mississippi
The producers believe that a
government owned pipe line
will be the solution of the
present problem.
Indian Commissioner Cato Sells
and Adjutant Boyd, of the U. S.
navy, are due in the next few
days at Tulsa to investigate the
feasability of building a govern-
ment pipe line to the fields. This
pipe line is almost certain to be
built as the government must
protect the interests of the In-
dians, who are its wards, and up-
on whose land most of the produc-
tion is found. The present low
price offered by the Standard Oil
Co. affects the royalty of these
Indians.
