made up of people from every
state in the Union, and to say
that the lawless from every one
of the states had settlod in this
county and make up our juries, is
a libel upon its fare.

or we would not have done him
the wrong to evea think he should
have been punished. This coun-
ty is the place to do your killing
if you have any to do.
The above is an editorial which
appeared in last week's Herald-
Sentinel. The Beacon can not
pass such a direct insult to the
citizenship of this county without
condemning it. The citizenship
of this county is just as pure as
any in the Union, and the juries
which sit in our eourts are as
fearless, law-enforcing and capa-
ble as any who sit in other courts.
The insinuation that all past
jurors and, perforce, all subse-
quent jurors, have been ami will
be willing to uphold and encour-
age outlawry, is as reprehensible
as it is false. The writer of that
article seems to be long on criti-
cism and short on perception.
We might suggest that if the at-
mosphere of this county is not
agreeable, and he feels he is not
safe in the hands of a jury of his
peers, that the way to Michigan
Is still open.
Not long since the H.-S. blew
off a hot blast because an arttcle
appeared in the Beacon which
dealt with the attitude, of the
county to the city, and remarked
something about tin* feebleness of
the Beacon's intellect, and so
nearly did it come home that we
haden't wit enough to reply, but
whan the above was written the
writer was in full possession of
his towering intellect. We must
conclude, then, that this assault
was deliberate, Now, why should
such an arraignment as this be
made of the citizens - of this
county?
From time to time remarks
have fallen that 110 one who conies
from south of Mason and Dixon s
line is quite so good, quite so
honorable or law-abiding, as lie
who has sniffed the lake brer.es:
that the people from the other
quarters of the globe are pistol
titers, etc., but in this article the
wholesale charge of corruption
arttd lawlessness is Hung full in
' the face of every. citizen in the
county.
The statement that twenty men :
have gone free in this county may J
be tauc; it may be many more j
than that; yet it does not give J
These officials seem to forget that
their duty is to instruct th jury
and then let the responsibility rest
where it belongs, with the jury,
but upon every pretext occasion
is taken to lambaste some one.
There seems to be a microbe whoso
mission is to work on Federal
Judges and the symptom general-
ly manifests itself by enlarged
head and waspishness. They for-
get that they are ordinary clay.
He who comes before them must
do their obsequious pleasure or
take the "roast" they see fit to
hand out.
These men who sat on the jury
in t hese cases have the same righ's
and should be as free from censure
in 1 he discharge of their duty as
the judge, ami beeause of their
seeing fit- to bring in a verdict of
not guil'y gave the court no legal
or justifiable grounds 1 o "roas1"
any one. It, is simply a wanton
exercise of a license which is
uiken by' some judges in ihe
conduct of 'heir courts, without
reason or jus'ice lo pallia-e or
excuse i'.
