financed a trip for a Tulsa teacher to a
summer newspaper seminar at the Uni-

“Your Newspaper — Heritage of Truth
Frontier of Freedom” The industry-
wide celebration paid tribute to the 1-
770 daily and 9000 weekly newspapers
published in the United States It is
sponsored by Newspaper Association

Full page ads were run by many pa-
pers in observance Included was the
Tulsa Daily World Byron V Boone
publisher and the Tribune with a se-
ries of full page ads titled “Many Hands
Make a Newspaper” The ads showed
a close-up of hands doing various jobs
involved in producing a paper

Leader which ran pictures of staff and

American Red Cross wrote a “letter to
the editor” Mrs Winnie Yager Bris-
tow News paying tribute to the nation’s
press
Among many Oklahoma newsmen
who helped observe the Week by speak-
ing to civic clubs were Harold Hubbard

ston to the Lawton Rotary club
Wilbur Martin bureau chief of Asso-
ciated Press Oklahoma City told mem-
bers of the Norman Lions club that with
modern speed in communication a
newspaper reader is never more than
two minutes away from any news event
in the world
“Your 5-cent newspaper is the world’s
biggest bargain” Martin said Produc-
tion costs have risen so the small cost
which the subscriber pays for his news-
paper is truly a bargain
“More and more people are putting
up roadblocks between reporters and
news sources” he observed “but re-
porters are trying to present an accurate
picture of what’s happening in the
world”
United Press International represen-

copy and is capable of mixing type of

Former Publisher Dies
David L Watson jr 72 Beggs for-
mer owner and publisher of the Dem-
ing (N M) Headlight and Graphic
died October 19 in a Tulsa hospital He
had owned 37 newspapers in 11 states
during his career Services were held
at Beggs October 22 a In Oklahoma as
a youth he was associated with his fa-
ther in publishing the Beggs Standard
weekly started in 1902

Tinker Air Force Base
Fifty aviation writers representing
some of the top newspapers of the coun-
try visited Oklahoma City’s Will Rogers
airport October 11
They were welcomed October 10 by
Tinker Air Force Base OCAMA com-
mander Maj Gen Lewis L Mundell
He briefed them on the mission of the
local base which supports the air force
worldwide Writers toured the air
freight terminal to watch loading oper-
ations of aircraft parts
Writers also watched 25000 pounds
of aircraft parts loaded in less than 10
minutes after the parts left the freight
terminal for the ramp of one of Logair’s
newer cargo planes the Argosy
