Attonscy General Olney haa nn-
der consideration a scheme for
capturing the Cook gang of out-
laws, and will within a few days
render a decision. Senator White
of California called upon the At-
torney General, accompanied by
Captain Oliver of Han Franciaco.
The Senator stated that he person-
ally knew Oliver; that he was sec-
retary of a detective agency
that the agency would like to have
the job of capturing certain out-
laws in the Indian country. Sen-
ator White also added that he
knew that this agency was employ-
ed in California a 11 umber of times
to arrest bad men in that state, and
*0 far had been very satisfactory.
In fact, the agency had 1
three men already in OL
wanted in California and brought
them back under a reward offered
by the state. He believed that if
the United States would offer are-
ward for the members of the Cook
gang, aud place the job in the
hands of the agency, the arrests
would lie mude in due time.
The Attarney General made in-
quiries as to the cost of such an
inveritment, when Oliver stated that
he had understood that there were
five very bad men. including Cook,
who were wanted, and if this was
the nlimber, the ugency would take
the joh for $10,(100. They would
agree to bring them in and turn
them over to the United States of-
ficials in any district named by the
Attorney General for S^'.OOO n head
If only Cook undone or two more
were wanted they would not under,
take the job for less than 910,000-
The proposition appeared to in-
terest the Attorney General, and
nfter some observation he said that
he would have to ask for an appro-
priation to cover the expense. Sena-
tor White observed that if the At-
torney General would ask for the
amount to be appropriated he
thought that there would be very
little doubt the allowance would be
made.
Senator White has conferred
with Senators from Arkansas, Tex-
as, Kansas an>l Missouri, and it has
been agreed that in the event the
Attorney General recometids the
appropriation will lie allowed.

Washington, January 15.—The
long-pending question of opening
the Wichita Indian reservation in
Oklahoma to settlement was set tied
yesterday by the House Committee
on Indian Affnirs. which voted to

Delegate Flynn. This bill stipulates
that the Choctaw and ('hickisaw
tribes. which claim ownership of the
land, must bring suit liefore the
Court of Claims of the District of
Columbia within sixty days after
the bill becomes an act to* sustain
their title, otherwise the Wichita*

of the lands, as they will in ease

There are nearly l.mm.otit) acres of
these lands own-d by the Indians.
The Wichitas will be allowed KM)
acres each, and the remainder of the
land will be opened to settlement
under the homestead law at $1.25
per acre.

Resolutions.
Secretary Hoke Smith, in answer
to an interview as to whether he
was going to make any resolutions
for New Year's, said: "There is
no |iersonal resolution I am going
to make, but I am going to turn
over a new leaf for a few prom-
inent pfrs.mage, and one in which
everybody will be interested. The
man in question is the Indian, nnd
the new leaf he will turn will be
how to work. I have called to-
gether all my Indian agents for no
other purpose than to have them
instill into the Indian the neces-
sity of earning his bread by the
sweat of his brow. It will be a
hard thing fur him to lenrn, harder
then the new habits which most of
you young men attempt to take on
New Year s day, but if persistence
will avail I intend to do all I can
to help him td learn it."
