Free Press Protects
Public Governor Says
In His Radio Speech
Government at all levels is better be-
cause of a free press Governor Gary
said November 8 in his biweekly radio
broadcast
Gary said “Anyone in public office
has reporters looking over his shoulders
constantly” and added “This is the best
possible protection the public can have”
Gary who has met with the press
twice a day for four years said he felt he
had been treated unfairly at times and
that there were times when he felt “a
particular reporter failed to get his facts
straight” He added “In spite of these
occasional defferences of opinion I have
not doubted the basic honesty or integ-
rity of the press corps here at the capi-
tol” Gary said most of the reporters he
knows are seriously concerned about
presenting the facts accurately to the
public “When you consider the serv-
ices they render the experiences they
must have and the deadlines which they
face daily I think it is fair to say that
most of them are underpaid” he said
“If money was their aim in life I am
sure most of them could do far better at
something else”
