Sea of Underground Ice.
Redding, Cal., Dec. 24.—While
shoveling gravel from a pit at
Black Butte mountain, five miles
above Sisson, Southern Pacific
workmen have discovered a vast
underground sea of ice that is
believed to have been formed in
prehistoric times. Some are of
the opinion that the Black Butte
mountain that now rears its peak
skyward came into existance af-
ter the formation of the ice.
The Black Butte mountain is a
great source of supply for bal-
last for the railroad company.
The ice was discovered after a
three quail, and his wife, know-
ing if he got thoroughly interested
in the pursuit of game, he would
be out till long after suppertime,
persuaded him to come to the
house and they would have sup-
per, when he could go out again.
"All right," said the farmer.
"I will dress these and we'll have
them for supper."
His wife remarked on the full-
ness of the craws of the birds,
and on opening one it was found
full of chinch bugs! Out of
curiosity they counted and found
j over 400 dead chinch bugs in the
! craw of one quail! Said the far

eleven pounds, 10 cents for a
half bushel, thirty pounds; 15

To Encourage Baby Raising-
Topeka, Kan., Dec. 21.—In or-
der to encourage the raising of
big families the commisioners of
Shawnee county have voted to
increase the salary of every em-
ployee in the court house $5 per
month for every baby born in his
family.
"In placing a premium on ba-
bies" said Commissioner Sterne,
"we are simply carrying out the
republican policy of encourage-
ment of infant industries and the
Roosevelt idea of big families.
In case of twins the employee
will get a raise of $10 per month
