Among the treaties ratified

ty for construction of an Isth-
mian canal; for purchase from
Spain of Caygayan and one or
two other Philippine islands;
renewal of commercial treaty
with Spain, and the Alaskan
boundary treaty, while those
not ratified were the reciproc-
ity treaty with Cuba; 1 lay-
Bond treaty with Newfound-
land; Panama canal treaty;
reciprocity tr eaties with
iranee, Argentina, British
West Indias, Canada, and with
other countries. 1
An extra session of Con-
gress was convened by the
President on Thursday last.
Two years ago today Ex-
Pres. Benj. Harrison died at
Indianapolis.

THE FIFTY SEVENTH CONGRESS.
The Fifty-Seventh Con-
gress is 110 more. It ceased
to exist at noon on March 4th
and has been gathered into
the dead past where preced-
ing congresses are sleeping
the sleep of the just—or of the
unjust.
The closing days of the late
congress were filled with in-
terest and herucleon efforts
of congressmen to pass their
pet bills.
Among the bills passed
were those providing civil
government for the Philip-
pines- new bankruptcy law;
expediting cases under the
Sherman anti-trust law; crea-
ting the Dej artment of Com-
merce and Labor; applying
Government aid to restoration
of arid lands;prohibiting trans-
portation of unmarked oleo-
margarine; providing a gen-
eral staff for the army; estab-
lishing a national militia; re-
quiring automatic couplers on
railway cars; for construction
of the 1 anama canal; provid-
ing for increase in the navy;
providing a Philippine curren-
cy, and a bill prohibiting the
sale of liquors in the Capitol.
1 he defeated bills included
those for the admission of
Oklahoma, New Mexico and
Arizona as states; to protect
the President and the succes-
sion from anarchists; pure food
law; providing for reciprocity!
with Cuba; Littlcfield anti-'
Miss Catherine Harrell, of
Oklahoma City, has been
named sponsor for Oklahoma
at the reunion of the Confed-
erate Veterans at New Or-
leans in May. She is a hand-
some young woman and will
do honor to the occasion.
A Kockford, 111.,policeman
weight 500 pounds, joined the
Masons recently. The Ma-
sonic goat went in, sized up
the candidate, and fled.
The Lone Wolf Echo, for-
merly published by J. R. Thom-
as, has been purchased by Dr.
W. J. Patterson, and will be!
republican in politics. >
