The coal mining interests sur-
rounding South McAlester are
business lubricator of not only vast
importance at the present time, but
expanding with each succeeding
year. As index to their impor-
tance it may be stated that over
$150,000 was paid to the miner*
last Saturday, the bulk of which
finds it* wav into the trade channels
leading to this city.—Daily Capital.
Colonel John Jumper. ex-Ceief
of the Seminole* and at the time of
his death representative of his peo-
ple in Congress, died recently. He
was 73 years old, and worth nearly
$100,0U0. Jumper waa probably
the first real Indian that President
Cleveland ever met. During Cleve-
land'* first term. Jumper acted in-
terpreter for several parties of
Creeks and Seminole* who visited
Washington.
Jas. Lear, of Krebs, reported at
the marshal's office Thur*day the
discovery of a dead human body,
about midway between here and
Hartshorno which had evidently
been lifeless several days. _No one
can identify the bodjr, nor is there
any clue to the identity of the slay-
er. The body was near a house, but
the parties at the house knew noth-
ing of the cause of its demise. One
of the deputies was sent out todav
to lake care of the remains.—South
McAlester Capital.
Joseph Sawyer, foreman of the
night shift at'Spaulding'* gin, met
with an accident Thursday night
last that resulted in his death. H<
was assisting one of the hands in
rolling up on a plat-form a 500-
pound bale of cotton. In some
manner he slipped and fell and the
big cotton bale fell on top of him,
cruabing him to the ground and
dislocating the spinal column. Drs.
Blackemore and Davis were sum-
moned, and upon examination it
wia found that his iujuriea were
fatal, the lower portion of the
body being completely paralyzed.
He was removed to hie boarding
heuse on the East Side where he
lingered, Buffering excruciatingly,
until Saturday evening about 9
o'clock when death cam* to hi*
relief.—Phoenix.
Green McCurtain, the newly-
elected chief of tbe Choctaw na-
tion, in his annual message to the
national council say* of the ten-
ure of land in common:
"The Congress of the United
State* during the last two or three
year* enacted laws that can be in-
terpreted in no other way than
that our tenure of land in common
isdissasteful to them. And there
is another equally clear interpreta-
tion of these laws, and that is oar
tribal government must become
broader and we mnst take certain

change in tbe holding of our lands
