KEING THINGS AT NIGHT"
'he 11. S. government hud purchased
thHt part of Claremore lying east of
( Mo.-Pac. track*, and turnod the
ne into a national park and all the
tiiientH of that portion of the city
ire immensely wealthy.
A great meeting wan being held on
tird street and every one from the
Ht end carried a huge roll of money
ith which to tantalize hi* or her un
rtunute neighbor of the west side.
neie suddenly rich people offered to
iild a tine court houBe and jail, also a
wnty high school, in order to quiet the
tvingn of the Rogers County Democrat
ntl hush the cry of graft, and other
tings.
It was decided at this meeting to
Mild Ihe court house "far from the
^adding crowd," and the location
elected was on the hills west of Cat
reek. Some wit in the crowd suggest
d that the reason for such selection
vas to give the authorities a better
Hew of crime in the city.
Along about this time the people from
he east side of town discovered they
had no place to call home, and they got
busy and by night fall all the real estate
on the west side of town had changed
hands, and the Chelsea Reporter came
out in red head lines saying the abstrac-
ters were again in clover, or words to
that effect.
A* usual in such cases the federal
government discovered that there was
not enough available money in the
treasury to meet the payments on the
recently acquired property, so your
Uncle Joe Cannon and others of his ilk,
engineered a bill through congress,
authorizing the coinage into money ol
all the silver bars in the possession of
the government, with which to pay the
east aiders for their property, and to
atone, in a measure, for "the crime of
*73."
The Chamber of Commerce had so
much money on hand that they ceased
trying to get industries to locate here,
but they stood ready and willing to
build any kind of a factory asked for
with the understanding that the recipi-
ents would have to import their laborers
from the rural towns near Claremore,
as the people here had all retired from
active business, and were devoting their
entire time to enjoying life and making
daily excursions to the suburban towns
of Tulsa, Collinsville, Proyor Creek and
Coffey ville on that long talked of electric
line.
The Frisco and Mo.-Pac. railroads had
ceased to pasB through Claremore, as
the city council had declared them both
to be nuisances and constant menaces
to the quiet and pleasant life of the
many millionaires living here.
The "jobberwocks" of the "Clare-
more ring" (discovered by Bill Harper)
had gone out of business and there was
no one here to hold office, so the build-
ing of the court house was abandoned
and the county seat went to Sageeyah
switch as that place offered the best
inducements a large expanse of land
and no hot air propositions, thus leaving
Foyil and Claremore Mound dallying
with "the hind teat."
The entire town had become a place
of palatial residences and every one
bad brought their poor relations here to
show them "our national park" and
how to live in ease and luxury.
The Sequoyah hotel had some five or
six thousand boarders, and it was
indeed a sky scraper, for I saw one man
fall from the top story and he had not
struck the pavement below when I
awoke from my dream. He may have
stopped, however, to speak to W. P.
Johnston, whose abstract office was on
the twenty-seventh floor of the building.
The postoffice was still under the
management of Mr. Jennings, but all
mail wasdelivered by automobile, Herb
Moore having the contract at a fabulous
sum, the entire amount received being
devoted to paving the streets, that
other |ieople might have easy riding.
A great demand arose from the entire
state for some of the citizenship of
Claremore, and it was currently report-
ed that the next governor would hail
from the valley lying between the
Verdigris river and the classical Dog
creek.
The state legislature had enacted into
law a measure, (declaring an emer-
gency,) which required that its mem-
bers should at least have horse sense;
this proved to be a boomerang, for under
that law the Oklahoma legislature did
not have a quorum, and the majority of
the members began •'to tickle the bwom
of Mother Earth" with the latest
inventions used for that purpose.
Out-of-town people who owned pro-
perty here surrendered all claim to their
holdings and gave it to the state of
Oklahoma to be sold for the building of
the New Jerusalem capital, but the
■tate turned them down and most of the
vacant lots were almost hid from the
public gaze by accumulated taxes.
No regularly organized city govern-
ment existed, and when any light waa
needed on a subject, the Caney River
Gaa Company furnished it free of charge.
(This laat statement is also a dream.)
Such immense wealth had developed
every one want*! to give ««^ng to
the poor for CMM.
discovered that no one here needed

and influence went to help the uspiru-
tiom of Verdigris switch In thai
direction.
Stranger* from all parts of the world
wandered here to see the new order of
things and "marveled muchly" at the
conditions existing. The churches Imd
all consolidated and agreed to direct
sinners heavenward from one pulpit,
each denomination furnishing a preacher
who simply emphasised what the pre-
ceding minister had said.
The women of the city had all become
pri/.e beauties and wore in addition to
numerous other things, a bewitching
smile, with which they captivated and
captured the nimble-minded men at will.
All widows were given fifteen minutes
to find a husband, and widowers were
escorted to the city limits by the
Claremore band,
Third street was used principally asu
place of gathering and planning the
next move for the happiness or unhap-
piness of the masses, and on either side
of the street easy chairs, without adver-
tisements, could be found. Here great
questions of national import received
consideration, and many a loud-mouthed
politician aided In bringing about the
former condition of things before the
establishment of the national park and
state radium water reservoir.
Finally the |ieople tired of doing noth-
ing, deposited their wealth in the banks
and checked it out in payments for im-
provements of every kind. The old
wooden shacks 011 Third street gave
way to fine business houses and many
new faces appeared among our business
men. Several railroads, heretofore
existing only on paper, actually arrived
and Claremore was herself again.
"Say, fellow, what is the matter with
you?"
"Nothing, it was only a dream.'
