counting the population at 35,000, it
will be seen how impossible it will be
to give each citizen 130 acre* and
equalize the allotments with the balance
of tbe land. There would be left only
320,014 acres of land for equalizing al-
lotments, townsites, cemeteries and the
various grants to schools,
Senator Qnarles may not get a com-
plete idea of affairs in the Territory in
bis *hort visit here, but one thing is
certain he has got next to the ring of
politicians that have been rnnuing the
tribal affairs, and his knowledge will be
of advantage to the Cherokee people.
Th* understanding between the govern -
ment and the Cherokee people will be
the better from the senators visit.
The proposition of some of the mem-
bers of council to negotiate a treaty
providing for the allotment of lands on
tbe acreage plan is simply a waste of
Cherokee funds. Congress would never
entertain such a proposition. Whenever
this country is allotted it will be on an
appraised basis and the sooner the idea
is accepted by the Cherokee people, the
sooner tbey will be able to arrive at a
satisfactory agreement with tbe United
States.
