Destructive Ice Storm
Strikes Area Monday
'A destructive ice storm what
was termed by many old timer as
being one of the worst to ever vis-
it northeastern Oklahoma arrived
Monday morning when a drizzling
rain fell ail day and ice formed on
everything Telephone end Electric
light wires were heavy laden with
ice but in Picher no disruption of
service occured altho other points
reported some alight inconveni
ences Most damage was confined
to shrubs and trees as limbs war
broken off and tree otherwise
mangled Highways were coated
with ice and driving was scry haz-
ardous but no serious accident had
been reported at this time
Tuesday morning the rain was
still failing in a drizzle and the ice
forming heavier and heavier The
temperature stood near freezing

ceived word last week that Mrs
Amher’s brother-in-law Mr J A
Love had passed away suddenly at
his home in Knoxville Tenn on
Jan 4 His funeral services were
held there Friday
Mr and Mrs lArchpr had i
turned home from a month’s visit
in Tennessee only two days before
Mr Love had been ill with influ-
enza a few days during Christmas
but was apparently recuperating
when they returned home

enjoyed a sort of a home coming on
the Picher court last Friday even-
ing when the three visiting teams
won all the games j
The Wyandotte Bears have a big
strong experienced team and are go
ing to cause a lot of trouble in the
conference this year They won the
game by a score of 46 to 36 One of
their forwards turned in a total of
23 points Bill Williams of Picher
also had hia eye on the basket and
rang up 17 points Bob Brown got
9 Bill Anderson 7 Williams who
is the only player on the Picher
squad with previous “A" team ex
perience was acting captain for the
game The score at the half was 20
to 9 in favor of the visitors

received quite serious burns early
Saturday morning when the mat-
tress in his room at the Old En-
glish inn 112 South Columbus
street became ignited Linsky ap-
parently went to sleep while smok-
ing a pipe on tho bed His cries for
help wereheard by Clark Cornwall
neighbor who went to the res
cue of the old man and called the
fire department Cornwall suffered
severe burns on bis egs in the
rescue Linsky was taken to the
Miami Baptist hospital? suffernig
from burns about the right side
and back
The fire burned the mattress
wallpaper on the room and part of
the wooden bed before it could be
extinguished by the fireman
The inn is owned by Mrs Maude
Cark and Mr Linsky had lived in
a room there for some time

Miami To Picher
Hoe Bussey who owns the Sur-
plus Army store on South Connell
and recently moved it here from
Miami state that he has one of
th largest stocks and lowest prices
to be found anywhere Mr Bussey
decided to move his store to Picher
after a checkup of his customers
showed that a majority of them
cam from the northern part of the
county He moved into th vacant
room north of the H O Green bar-
ber shop across from the postof-
fice Bill Brotherton is store man
agar and Elmer Cherry is clerk
Mr Bussey or “Hec" as he is fam-
iliarly known operates a plumbing

A change in managers has taken
place at the local theatres during
the pest week and Lawrence Hug-
he Well has taken (Mr th work
Mr Wells ha had considerable
experience in theatre work as he
began his career with Griffith Con
solids ted Theatres Inc as a door
man at the Lyric theatre in Vin-
it in August 1938 he was advanc-
ed to relief projectionist and head
doorman in May 1939 and was then
made assistant manager at Vinita
in June 1942 He entered the arm-
ed services of his country while in
this capacity and served 29 months
overseas in Africa Italy Germany
and France with the 11th Armed
Bn 1st Armed Division
He returned to Vinita and was
reemployed as' assistant manager
in June 1947 He was transferred
tq Hobart theatre in February
1948 as a relief manager and ap-
pointed manager and transfered to
Pichor theatres January 6 1949
Mr Wells is a Sooner by birtiC
having seen th first light of day
on July 4 1919 at Indianola He
graduated from th grade school at
that place and attended 1 year of
high school later graduating from
inita High in 1937 He is a member
of the American Legion and his

Mr Rankin who has been man-
ager since Jim Worsley left has
resigned from tho Company and is
reported to have made other con-
