RUNNING A "HOME" STATE
Tne troubles Brother Bill Taft is
having with his own dear little solidly
Republican state of Ohio must be
amusing to outsiders.
Taft's party in the Buckeye sJatehas
been pretty badly flyspecked bv the
efforts of would-be but can't-be suc-
cessors of Uncle Mark Hanna to run it
for the corporations and the usual en-
ormous Republican majorities. The
southern tail of the organiistion is run
by the unspeakable Cox. with his policy
of C. O. I . The Northern head i
wagged this way or that by the little
2x4 Dick and the repudiated M. T.
Herrick, while around in the gizzard of
the thing circulates the long legged,
bowhiakered Harris and Warren Hard
ing. who has been training for and
never entered the gubernatorial Mara-
thon since almost the time of old Ben
Wade and Joah Giddings.
ln addition to such disorganization.
Gov. Harmon, a rising Denocratio presi-
dential fcoasibility. has been digging up
slathera of grafting by past Republi-
can state officia's, and things have an
ugly look for Brother Bill Taft's home
state in 1912.
When Ohio Republicans aren't hold-
ing Ohio offices the Ohio climate is ao
cold that you can almost feel the north
pole, so a number of the very smartest
Buckeye politicians went over and
slept in the White House a couple of
nights and r°r8U«ded Brother Bill to
surrender his assistant attorney general.
Wade Ellis, that Wade might become
chairman of the party back in Ohio.
Brother Bill said he hated to do it.
Wade was making a red hot assistant
attorney; had already bitten off moat
of the tentacles of the rapacious cor-
poration octopus, unbeknownst to the
octopus or any one else; but, for the
good of the party, and all that. etc. etc.
Well, Wade hadn't digested the ban-
quet put into him by Dick, Herrichand
other "Managers." upon his inaugura-
tion as chairman, before it was dia-
covered that the rank and file, largely
the rank, didn't want him doing the
bo«sing. Whereupon, Brother Bill
writes a letter, which mysteriously
gets promptly into print, repudiating
Wade as his selection.
Wade ia out in the cold, cold world
holding the bag.
Again, certain Republican members
of the Ohio legislature, not believing
that Dick and Herrick could wear Uncle
Mark Hanna's shoes without being lost
in them or losing the shoes altogether,
