BIG BATTLE
GOES TO RENO
NO OPPOSITION ON PART OF
NEVADA GOVERNOR
PREPARATIONS ARE BEGUN
Fighters Will Reach New Field and
Resume Training at Once—Will
Complete Arena by Flrat
of Month
Reno, Nev.—Witta Reno definitely
fixed aa the battle ground, with posi-
tive assurance from the governor that
no attempt to Interference will be
made by the state authorities, and
with preparations already under way
for building the arena, the Jeffries*
Jobnson fight seems certain of ful-
fillment July 4.
The selection of a site for staging
the big fight was made Tuesday after-
noon. It ia a rock-strewn field in
East Reno, about a mile and a half
from the heart of the city, and Is
familiar in ring history as the scene
of the Hart-Root contest held July
4, 1906. On one side it is flanked
by the tracks of the Southern Pa-
cific railway, and on the otter by a
trolley line known as the Reno-
Sparks nterurban railway.
Contractor McLaughlin went over
the location Tuesday with Promoter
Rickard and the Reno fight commit-
tee and immediately began to carry
out plans already prepared for the
construction of the arena.
A building about 300 feet square,
modeled along the Identical lines of
the structure begun In San Francisco,
will be put up. It is hoped to have
it completed by the first of the
month. No change wll be made in
the original arrangement of seats.
Another selection made was train-
ing quarters for Jack Johnson. Tom
Flanagan, the champion's manager,
after looking over seveial sites, fin-
ally settled upon a roadhouse three
miles southwest of Reno, known as
Rick's resort. According to Flana-
gan, It is an excellent place for a
training camp and affords all the
necessary facilities.
Jim Jeffries will be stationed at
Moana Springs, three miles south of
Reno. Nothing is lacking at this
place, according to Manager Berger,
that could be desired in connection
with a fighter's camp. Natural hot
and cold water springs, an open air
pavilion already provided, comforta-
ble sleeping quarters and nearby
fishing streams and lakes, are among
the inducements offered by this place.
A double fight bill will be Reno's
offering July 4, if Sid Hester suc-
ceeds In carrying out bis plan to
stage the Langford-Ketchel fight here
on the morning of toe big battle
and in the same area. Hester was
busy Tuesday endeavoring to arrange
for a permit and In looking over nu-
merous sites for training quarters for
his fighters.

Honored by the Governor.
Effusive compliments have been
paid to Governor Marshall many
times, but it remained for an old Irish
woman to cap the climax.
The governor met her at a funeral
which he attended the other day and
she was full of reverence for the Indi-
ana executive.
"Ah," she said, "an' 'tis the guv'-

Didn't Know the Purpose.
Mark Twain, aa an example of un-
conscious humor, used to quote a
Hartford woman who said one day in
the late spring:
"My husband is the dearest fellow.
'Jim,' I said to him this morning, 'are
you very hard up Just now**
" 'I certainly am hard up,' he re-
plied soberly. 'This high cost of liv-
ing Is terrible. I don't know what I'm
going to do.'
" Then, Jim,' said I, 'I'll give up all
thought of going to the country for
July and August this year.'
"But the dear fellow's face changed,
and he said:
" 'Indeed, then, you won't, darling. I
thought you wanted to buy a hat with
an aigrette or some such foolishness.
No, no, my darling—Jim can always
find the money to let his dear little
wife go to the country.'"
