"STAR THI GREATEST PAPER"
Lawrence, Kan., Ma y21.—"I con-
sider The Kansaa City Star the great-
sot newspaper product on the Ameri-
continent," Jason Rogers, publisher of
the New York Glebe, told the atudents
of journalism at a banquet given by
the University Daily Kansan board
last night. v
"W. R. ffetaon was the greatest
newspafjar geniu* of this generation,"
Mr. Rogers continued. "Now that he
is gone,'' there m no other holds hia
plaoe. In my pgy-jjonal case, he gave
me help aml^chiR that my own fath-
er refused. His high ideals made him
t,tand head and shoulders above other
newspapermen of his age."
Mr. Rogers cited The Star . as a
newspaper whose influence was a
powerful factor in the upbuilding of
a great city. He urged young jour-
nalists to use all their energy «n en-
deavoring to foster the growth of
their particular town and state.
The subject of Mr. Rogers' address
was the prine paper shortage, a sub-
ject on which ha is a -recognized au-
thority. He showed samples of pa-
pers which endeavor to relieve the
news print shortage by curtailing ad-
vertising and limiting news space. On
the other hmuj he showed copies of
newspapers *whose regular editions
showed no such effort.
"Such newspapers, which use their
powerful ba/ik Accounts to control the
news print market strangle thp small
newspapers and impose upon the pub-
lic," Mr. Rogers said. "No living hu-
man being will read tfll the news, ad-
vertising, and features in a paper
weighing three pounds. Because of
the world wide news print shortage,
all newspapcrs^vill have to be read-
justed in size content. If the pa-
pers do nqit do this voluntarily the
government will have to tak<b a hand."
Mr. Rogers denounced the papers
that continue printing large editions
as profiteers, and praised The Star
for its system of limiting advertising,
and also fir it<- style of make-up,
whereby mutli news space is saved by
small headlines.
"Reporters who will be in demand
from now oa will be those who can
condense the news. They must be
able to tell a ooljjmn story in a "stick-
ful," ' he said.
Jason Rogers is chairman of a na-
tional committee to supply smaller
newspapers with print paper. His
plan, he said, \4 the banquet, is to buy
paper mills, tiie perduct of which will
be given only to the smaller newspa-
pers of the coarttrv.
