Aurora 111— May 27— -The
death of D W Stockwell of this
city at Ilawarden Canada last
night marked the passing of
one of the quaintest characters
in Illinois
He was known as “The Man
Who Stood Still”
A3 owner of one of the biggest
stores in Northern Illinois out-
side of Chicago during the Civil
War he prospered After the
war lie failed to keep abreast of
the times and the same goods
which he carried then still adorn
the shelves and show windows
of the store
Five years after the war he
was still making a profit In ten
year3 more the place was
couriosity shop and has continu-
ed so The hoop skirt barber
striped hose jet jewelry and
like antiquities continued a part
of his stock
In later years he was the only
one who entered the place ex-
cept visitors to the city He
did not advertise He had about
$10000 worth of goods and set
down to wait for customers who
never came He was at business
at 7 o’clock each morning and
remained until 6 in the evening
He was 77 years old
