1 here ia no greater obstacle to
republican success in state and
national elections than the fact
v that one man who baa been aigna'y
honored by the republican party
still clings on to his position; this
is not the time to discuss the que-
stion aa to whether Mr. Cannon or
the insurgents are to blame, there
ia a difference of opinion on this
point, but such are the conditions
that for the present speaker to re-
main in bis present position, is to
endanger the party in the coming
campaign; take for instance the
state of Oklahoma, there is a ap-
lendid chance to win, the great
maaa of our people are disgusted
with the state administration:
with Cannon and Ballinger out of
our way we could win easy, but
we cannot carry this additional
burden, the party leaders may line
us up in a republican meeting,
may refuse to profit by past ex-
perience, may oarry their policies
through with bannera unfurled
and brass bands, but men listen,
this is not carrying an election: to
win in this state we must not only
draw the solid republican vote,
but in addition, a goodly number
from the aocialists and democrats.
There are indications even now
of a break between the socialists
and the democrats, but voters of
other parties will not come to u
«s long as (slippery Dick and un-l
cle Joe) are standing in the way.
What's the use of ignoring these
facts, why go down under an ava-
Isnch of votes when by exercising!
a little firmness and horse aenue
we can redeem a state; Nearly
the same condition exists in many
other states.
A few years more and our Un
cle Joe will in the very nature of
things be called hence, then why
not step out of the way ? Rig[,t
n,,w it could be done gracefully.
Aleu have given up their lives for,
a good cause, ran Mr. Cannon give
up his position for the good of the
party that has done so much for
for him'( Loyalty to the men that
have elevated him to bis present
exalted position demands that hej
get out of the way, for him to re.
main where he is, 1s to assist the
democratic party in the coming
elections, to bring defeat to the
party Cannon frofewjfs to love.
A« to Mr. Ballinger, if he would
do bis party a lasting service, let
linn resign immediately, and we
will try to forget that lie ever ex.
iated in republican circles. Dout
rail at insurgency, it is the react.'
ion of czarism, self respecting re-
publicans of the Lincoln and Mc-
