THE IDEAL LIFE
"But seek ye first the kingdom of God. and His righteousness;
and all these things shall be added unto you." (Matt. 6 33)
This text is one of those rare sayings of the Master which comes
close to the heart of every one of us. thrills us with its promises; then
sends us to our knees to ask for mercy because we have kept it so
poorly. It is a golden rule of action in the great drama of life, the very
essence of Christian living and the. key to the happiest and most suc-
cessful life on earth. I
Xvery man who would make a succeed of life must have something
that is always first with him. If we really have faith in Christ, we
know his blessed kingdom, which is HU church, is entitled to the
finest and beet of everything we hnve and are—our affections, our
possessions, and our service. Without the righteousness his kingdom
affords, none of us shall be able to see the lord. As we contemplate its
beautiful and exalted standard, regardless of our own Imperfections. • w»
love to dwell upon It as the great divine ideal, and from it take re-
newed devotion.
It seems the providential part of the saying is more a gracious
added gift than a reward. Some scholars say the thought is from the
old custom of merchants to "throw in" some article with a large bill
of goods purchased. So, as we have sought and found the great re-
demption which Christ has purchi
blood, so the Father has added un
"wherewithal we shall be clothed.)* God’s temporal blessings have
• surely followed the righteous in evfry age. As said David of old. "X
have never seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread."*

WASHINGTON. June 1—<>PP-The
United States reached behind eastern
Europe’s "iron curtain" Saturday to
register a sharp protest with the Sov-
iet-controlled Romanian government
for Ita alleged curbing of political free-
doms.
The state department charged that
the Bucharest regime was "circum-
venting commitments" it had made
on political liberty. The note, made
public Friday night, contained de-
mands that Romania fix a date for
free elections and take measures to
protect tho opposition parties com-
peting.
Paralleling a British protest on the
same points, the note asserted that
American representatives had investi-
gated or witnessed enough Incidents
"to establish beyond any doubt that
political violence Is on the Increase.”
It also charged government censor-
ship was impeding the flow of news
from the United States, that the gov-
ernment was monopolising broadcast-
ing facilities, and that there were in-
creasing instances of organized bands
breaking up meetings of parties op-
posed to the present regime.

Man Faces Mighty Challenge in Atomic Age
Go to Church Sunday,
.By REV. NORMAN WHITEHOUSE
Pastor ef Pilgrim Cungregational Church
According to discriminating statistical computation. Christians, con-
sidered numerically, are 577 million strong. The church, when considered
in such a light, la indeed impressive, but few thinking people today would
consider the strength of the church in terms of it* pumbers. The obvious
difficulty 1* not in the count, but in the quality, the substance of that
count.
The church, as the channeling medium for the propagation of the
Christian gospel,, must ever be judged by the manner in which it confronts
impotent msn with the Word of the potent God. Recently, a competent
thinker has confronted u* with the sobering fact
that man. in view of hla spiritual accomplishments,
lias failed miserably in the attempt to catch up with
the forces released by the industrial revolution.
We no longer can indulge in the luxury of that
challenge. Modern man must now move forward,
for good or evil, toward spiritual achievement in axi'
atomic age. the implications of which are as yet
but dimly understood. We must grasp from this
something of the momentousness of the task con-
fronting the church. '• .
There is an ancient prayer, reported as coming
from the lipa of Breton fishermen: "O God. Thy
seas are- so great and my craft is so small " Few
statement* could better describe the position of
modem man. We have to rediscover in this cen-
tury the .ientativenese and sheer insufficiency of
humanity when humanity faces or tries to face,
life apart from God.
The church around the globe thia day must rise
to its responsibility.
WWh its message woven around the eternal verities, as revealed in Jesus
Christ, this will be more than sufficient to make us conquerors. ■
What an hour thia 1st Days now have weighted significance and
vital implications; the sea* appear rough and threatening, but a strong
church, planted firmly upon the rock of God's declaration in Jesus
Christ, can bring us salvation.
"Life consists not of abundance of thing* possessed, but in the abund-
ance of the one thing possessing you." The church brings you face to
face, heart to heart, mind to mind, with this abundance.
