Udine Italy, Dec. 27.—General Ca-
viglia's regular Italian forces advanc-
ed two kilometers this morning with-
out firing a shot in a combined land
and naval movement to close in on
Gobriele D'Annnuzio, the insurgent
leader in Fiume, whose men retired.
The Fiume triangle is now cut off
and the poet's aviation field has been
cr.ptured. The plan of General Ca-
viglia is gradually to tighten his grip
on Fiume until D'Annunzio is reduc-
ed to helplessness. Caviglia's men
advanced today from the north, cut-
ting off the top of the triangle of
which Fiume is formed and occupied,
Grobnico. Santa Croce and San Mattia.
The aviation field captured is at
Grobnico. The D'Annunzio troops
evacuated these points without offer-
ing the slightest resistance.
At points from the shore northward,
the D'Annunzio line gave way and the
regulars advanced half a kilometre-
It was. a simultaneous movement from
three sides.
The movement from the direction of
Udine was effecetd by an overwhelm-
ing body of trooDS whicn advanced on
the thinly-held line of D'Annunzio's
leeionaries. The advance was accom-
plished principally by Alpini, who oc-
cupide the high ground covering the
niggedi territory to the rear of Fiume,
including two ranees of hills. Toward
the sea the regulars line is held by
royal guards and carabinners.
General Caviglia on Friday ordered
the occupation of advanced positions
around Fiume in consequence of re-
cent incidents and the threatening
attitude taken by D'Annunzio's le-
gionaires.
The poet's soldiers resisted the ad-
vance troops, who lost five men killed
and thirty wounded.

Washington, Dac. 27.—The worst
Is over. A turn for the better In the
business situation of the country has
come. Government officials generally
are glad to be able to send a Christ-
mas mppsaee to the American people
that all danger of a collapse in th*
credit situation has nassed and that
from now on. a steady return to nor
mal conditions mnv be expected.
Every bit of evidence fathered her*
confirms the view of officials that
with the exception of individual case*
where bad manap-oment or imprudent
financing has caused some concerns
to hansr bv the ev^lash the entire busi-
ness outlook is favorable.
The nrocess of readjustment is not
over. Perhaps, some of het most pain-
ful changes will come when the nrice
of labor is gradually hroucht d^n
but in the business world itself t*v
bcttom has been reached and the fu-
ture is by no me«<ns as dark as it was
a month asro. Letters received fro**"
bank officials in various parts of the
country indicate that the turn came in
the last six or seven davs and that the
improvement is substantial and sound
