Farm Ceaaus of Oklahomi
Oklahoma City, Jan. 16—To
increase the efficiency and pro-
ductiveness of the farms of Okla-
homa, to assist the Government
in acurately estimating the food
situation in America, above al
to Ueip WIN THE WAR-these
are i he objects of the Patriotic
Farm Census which is being un-
dertaken under the direction of
the Oklahoma State Council of
Defense. It is a big task. Ii
will cover the entire state. Ok-
lahoma is the fiist state to un-
dertake such a task on this scale
When the task is completed it
will be one more indication of
the patriotic and progressive
spirit of Oklahoma farmers.
And here are some of the things
the Farm Census will NOT do:
It wi I not increase the taxes
of the farmer.
It will not decrease prices of
farm products.
It will not result in any farm
products being seized by tLe
government.
What !W Far* Cum Mmi
For the prosecution of the war
and the conserving of American
resources, especially ib the food
liae, ths first step it to know
exactly what theslhejourtes are.
This is whit the Farm Census
will accomplish. Oklahoma is
one of the greatest agricultural
and food piooucing states in the
Union. There are in Oklahoma
194,784 farms. Of these 99,000
in round numbers are rented;
the remainder are owned by the
occupants. There are 13,100,
000 acres under cultivation and
21,000,000 acres under farm con
trol. To ascertain the resources
and the needs of these farms is
a huge task, the sise of which
can be appreciated from the fact
that 500 books, each containing
450 names—225,000 names in all-
will be sent out by the council
of defense.

The actual taking of the cen
■us will be done by th** county
assessors, aided by several as-
sistants in each county as a pat-
riotic service. It should be em-
phasised, however, that neither
this informstion, nor other in-
formation acquired during the
course will or can be used to in-
crease taxesu The information
is collected solely for the benefit
of the government snd in order
to ascertain the needs of the
farmer in order to fill these
needs.

The breeding stock of the
state will also be carefully tabu-
lated. This will tend to prevent
the killing of animals which
would ultimately be more valu-
able as breeders. In Germany
in the early part of the war snd
high prices for meat led tosn in-
discriminate slsughter of ani-
mals^ especially pigs. Later on
this wsa regretted by both the
producer and consumer and hss
been a source of great detriment
to Germany. The farm Census
will ensble Oklshoma to avoid
this miatake.
It is hoped, and confidently
expected, Mhat the farmers of
Oklahoma will cheerfully aid in
making the Farm Census a suc-
cess. Oklahoms will be the first
of the states to conduct this on
so complete and thorough
scale. The farm census will add
to the efficiency of the farmer.
It will benefit the entire country.
It will help win the war.

Newspapers Consolidate
Okeene ia one of the best towns
of its sice in the state. But in
almost every town some lines of
business are oveidone. It is so
in Okeene. This town will
only support one paper as it
ought io be aupported. There
has betn a move on foot recently
to cansolidste the three papers,
which was consumated this
week. We bought the name and
business of the Eagle, then sold
both the Leader and Eagle to
the Democrat. All three will
be published thia week, after
which the new owner will pub-
lish only two papers. We re
luctantly let the Leader go, hut
realizing that two or three pap-
era in a town of thia aize can
only barely pay expenaea, we
atep down and out.—Okeene
