Deai Friend Ima: Your most
interesting letter received a few
days ago. Thia is Saturday P.
M. and ttmst all pMlre-boyafrom
this battery have gone down to
the City but as I was, or am so
far behind with my correspon-
dence thought I had better stay
and catch up or P will nut get
sny mail in the future. And maii
in the army is juat as important
and essential as your meals, "ha
ha." You aak me to tell you
something about Camp Kearny.
There is not a great deal to tell
about it. But will giye'you an
outline the best I can. There is
considerably over 30,000>oldit rs
here at present and more coming
all the time. Thf entiurxamp. is
nearlv as large as Wichita.
There is three regiments of ar-
tillery here with approximately
2.000 men to the regiment.
Several regimentsofCavelrvand
the rest mostly infancy, with a
regiment or two olmachine gun
companira. The camp is 6 miles
from the beach and48 milcS'from
San Diago The regimen t~l- m
in is located on thu extreme east
side of the camp. EacJ regiment
has about 1.000 head of horses
"That is each regiment of artil
lery." they use them tto haul the
big guns. Six horses and three
drivers to each gun. It takes 190
men to keep four guns going
when they are in action The
only weapon we carry in the
srti'lery ic a pistol (automatic
38. colts)-*ttd a bolo. (boloia%
big heavy knife about 16 inches
long and weighs about 2i lbs or
uear that and is carried in a
scabbert and I believe would be a
weapon at close fighting.
With best regards to all, I
am, Yours truly,
F. A. Simmons.
