the Scbwartzchlld & Sulzberger Park-
ing Company of Chicago were fined
an aggregate of $25000 by Judge
Humphrey In the United States dis
v trlct court here The fines followed
a plea of guilty to Indictments charg-
ing conspiracy to accept railroad re-
bates The defendants were Samuel
Well of New York vice president of
the compan B 8 Cusey traffic man-
ager Vance D Sklpworth and
Charles E Todd assistant traffic man-
- ager - Mr Weil was fined $10000 the
other three $5000 each
With the entering of the pleas the
declaration was made that unless that
’ at least one of the cases Is Imme-
diately settled the life of Snmuel Well
vice-president of the company and one
of the defendants is in Jeopardy lie
Is said to be a nervous wreck and
fears were entertained for his life If
he had been allowed to continue un-
der tbe sigma of an Indictment The
plea was entered it is declared aftor
a' complete understanding had been
reached between counsel for the da-
fondants and Attorney General Wil-
liam H Moody While lu Chlrayo the
attorney general was apprised of the
condition of Vice-President Well and
It Is said agreed to the entry of a plea
of guilty with the understanding that
the jail provision of the law under
which tbe Indictment was returned
should be waived and merely a fine

made in the case of the other three
defendants ' The four defendants
were charged with unlawfully combin-
ing and agreeing to solicit rebates for
the Scbwartzchlld & Sulzberger com-

JIJI from Sasebo says that Capta'n
Iwlchl commander of the Ill-fated Ml-
kasa made an attempt to commit sui-
cide after an addreas to the sur-
vivors of the warship by Jumping
from a window He was severely
wounded about the head and Is now
reported to be In a critical condition
In the Sasebo hospital
It Is said that shortly after the de-
struction of the MikaRa Captain
Iwlchl collected the remaining mem-
bers of the vessel's criw In a room In
tbe sailors' training school He spoke
briefly and feelingly on the loss of the
ahlp He said that after enjoying a
aeries of victories he considered tbe
loss of the Mikasa one of personal re-
( sponsiblllty but he advised his men
not to lose heart
