What is the navy? A military foree
to defend our coasts and harbors and
protect our merchant marine
Is it a seprate military establishment
from the Army Marine Corps Coast
Guard ets? Yes The Army is con-
trolled by the War Department and the
Navy Marine Corps A Coast Guard are
handled by the Navy Department but
each Service is distinct from the others
What are some of the duties of the
men in the Navy To man the guns
work the engines operate the eleetrical

Can a man without any trade or prac-
tical experience enlist in the Navy?
Yes as apprentice seamean for deck
duty or fireman 3rd class for engineer-

If I have a trade and enlist where
will I be sent? Landsman for Yoeman
(Clerk) cook barber and hospital ap
prentices are sent to Newport for train-
ing Applicants for shipwrights ship-
fitter blacksmith and painter attend the
Artificer’s Sohool in Norfolk Ya
Schools for musicans are maintained at
all training stations
Where will I be sent if I have no
trade? Apprentice Seaman are sent to
the nearest of the four training stations
located at Newport Norfolk Great
Lakes and San Francisco Fireman 3rd
class are sent to the nearest navy yard
What are the age requirements for
enlistment? Apprentice seaman 17 to
26 Lds and Hosp App 18 to 25 all
others 21 to 35 (Bxoept Mess Att
and Ships Cooks 18 to 35)
Wbat are the physical requirements
for enlistment in the Navy? For a
man of 21 minimum height is 64 inches
barefoot and minimum weight 128 lbs
For minors betweeen 17 and 20 allow-
ances are made in height and weight
if otherwise well developed
Is it necessary for me to produce any
papers or evidenoe to the Recruiting
Officer? All applicants must present
evidence of date of birth Minors be-
tween 17 and 18 must have consent of
parent or guardian Applicants not
homed in the United States must pro
duce naturalization papers
What is the pay of a recruit who has
no trade? Apprentice seaman $3260
per month fireman 3rd class receives
$3620 per month
What is the pay of a man who isqual -ified
in some trade? Pay ranges from
$3660 to $7760 per month
What is the period of enlistment?
For a man 18 or over the period is 4
years for a minor under 18 the period
is for minority
What are some of the ohances for pro-
motion in the Navy? Opportunity is
given for advancement and the most de-
serving go up rapidly All men on
board ship are examined quarterly on
professional subjects and marked on the
scale of 1 to 4
What are the progressive grades thru
which a man is promoted? From the
lower ratings men advance to petty
officer 3rd class petty officer 2nd class
petty officer 1st class chief petty officer
and finally to warrant officer or com-
missioned officer
Does promotion depend entirely upon
merit or does outside influence help?

Has an enlisted man a chance of be
coming an offiicer? Petty officers are
eligible for rank of gunner- boatswain
carpenter machinist or pay clerk 100
enlisted men who have served one year
at sea and are under 20 at time of ap-
pointment are eligible for appointment
as midshipmen at the naval academy
after passing the required examination
Am I furnished with an outfit of uni-
forms? A complete outfit which with
proper care should last two years Af-
ter the first outfit of clothes must I
purchase my own? Yes at cost price
Have I any expense while in the naval
Service for food board medical atten-
tion etc? No except 20 cents per
month for hospital fund ' v
Who provides the means for transpor-
tation from my home to the nsarest
recruiting station? You do unless you
are acting under orders from proper
naval authorities
Who provides the transporation from
the recruiting station to the training
station or navy yard after enlistment?
The Government
Does the Government pay my faro
back homo when my enlistment expires?
Yes at the rate of 4 cents a mile from
place of discharge to place of enlistment
What does the food in the navy con
sist of? Plain wholesome food and
plenty of it
Does the Government provide fresh
provision for food or simply tinned and
dried provisions? Fresh meat fresh
vegetables and fresh fruit are supplied
in sufficient quantities to last during
ordinary cruises at sea
Is medical attention provided in the
Navy? Yes By competent medical
offiicers and trained assistants
Is dental attention provided in the
Navy? Yes a small charge is made for
the material used in the dental work
Is the descipline severe? Yes but it
is controlled by proper authorities and
is just and equitable
Is eorpal punishment inflicted upon
men in in the Navy? Corporal punish-
ment was abolished years ago
How often do men get ashore for re-
creation? Ordinarly every other day
when in port In ports where shore
laeve is undesirable boating fishing
and swimming parties are encouraged
Are furloughs granted often? When-
ever circumstance and length of stay in
port permit extended furloughs are
granted
