mediate Danger—Many Women
Among Those Killed at
Mayalaya.
Santiago, June 3.—Eighteen women,
fighting alongside of the men iu the
ranks of the rebel negroes, were shot
to death in a battle between an in-
surgent force and government troops
at Mayalaya. near Palma Soriana. One
hundred and twenty-seven rebels fell
beneath the fire of the regulars, while
many others were wounded.
Havana, June 3.—The actual con-
dition which prompted the Washing-
ton authorities to rush marines to
Guantanamo and bring a fleet of nine
battleships and more troops within
striking distance, was uncovered here.
The many protestations of prosperity
' * and of ability to crush the revolt is-
sued by President Jose Miguel Gomez
are revealed in a light that seems to
make any further delay on the part
of th nation obligated to protect prop-
erty and human life, inexcusable.
Facts which discredit the claims of
the Gomez administration to being con-
structive in policy, have been in poS'

THE SAFE LAXATIVE
FOR ELDERLY PEOPLE
! Most elderly people are more or
I less troubled with a chronic, per-
| Bistent constipation, due largely to
lack of sufficient exercise. They ex-
perience difficulty in digesting even
light food, with a consequent belching
of stomach gases, drowsiness after
eating, headache and a feeling of lassi-
tude and general discomfort.
Doctors advise against cathartics and
violent purgatives of every kind, rec-
, ommending a mild, gentle laxative
session of the state department for tonic_ like Dr. Caidwell's Syrup Pepsin,
weeks. Additional evidence of this to effect relief without disturbing the
character in documentary form is now
on the way to Washington.
Business is at an absolute standstill
and operations on all public improve-
ments have ceased. This leaves thou-
sands to choose between idleness akin
entire system.
Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin Is the
nerfect laxative, easy in action, cer-
tain *n effect and, withal, pleasant to
the taate. It possesses tonic proper-
ties *.hat strengthen the stomach, liver
to starvation, and joining the revolu- i an(j bowels and is a remedy that has
tionary forces.
The federal debt of Cuba has been
been for years the great standby in
thousands of families, and should be
run up since the inauguration of Cuban in every family medicine chesL It is
independence to the enormous sum of
$84,500,000. Added to this are unpro-
portionate provincial and municipal
debts. Graft is said to be rampant in
all departments of the government and
besides large sums due contractors on
uncompleted public improvements,
funds with which to carry on an effec-
tive campaign, are nowhere in sight.
Business men who are dependent up-
on the tranquility of the island for
success, are a unit for intervention or
such aid from the United States as will
equally as valuable for children as for
older people.
Druggists everywhere sell Dr. Cald-
well's Syrup Pepsin in 50c and $100
bottles. If you have never tried it
send your name and address to Dr. W.
B. Caldwell, 201 Washington St., Mon-
tlcello, 111., and he will be very glad to
send a sample bottle for trial.

revolt of the negroes is not a race war.
but a conflict in which all opposed to
the Gomez faction are invited to take
part. All official information is refus
ed at the palace. The local newspapers
are denied the use of the government
teelgraph.
Estonoz, with a force of 4.000 men,
occupies an almost impregnable posi-
tion on Mount Gloria, made famous bv
Garcia in 1895, when the latter with-
stood a five-day attack from 20,000
Spaniards. The force with Estonoz is
armed with new Krag-Jorgensen rifles
and have a good supply of ammunition.
The troops sent to crush the rebel-
lion number less than 5,000 and are not
trained in guerilla warfare. They are
officered by men of the Gomez politl-
" cal and social set in Havana. Foreign-
ers with exposed property are appeal-
ing to Consul General Rodgers for pro-
tection.
Cuba's total indebtedness is $84,500,-
000. With this financial load to carry
and pay the expense of maintaining the
government, President Gomez has a
total available revenue of less than
$33,000,000. His budget for the coming
year, however, asks for $42,000,000.

Wytheville, Va.. June 3.—After de-
liberating two hours and a half the
jury today found Claude Swanson Allen
guilty of murder In the second degree
for the killing of Judge Thornton I,.
Massie, at Hlllsville in March. The
jury recommended his punishment be
fixed at 15 years in the penitentiary.

he may testify in the other cases grow-

Physicians Recommend Castoria
CASTORIA has met with pronounced favor on the part of physicians, pharma-
ceutical societies and medical authorities. It is used by physicians with
results most gratifying. The extended use of Castoria is unquestionably the
result of three facts! First—The indisputable evidence that it is harmlesss
Second—That it not only allays stomach pains and quiets the nerves, but assimi-
lates the foods Third—It i3 an agreeable and perfect substitute for Castor Oil.
It is absolutely safe. It does not contain any Opium, Morphine, or other narcotio
and does not stupefy. It is unlike Soothing Syrups, Bateman's Drops, Godfrey's
Cordial, eto. This is a good deal for a Medical Journal to say. Our duty, how-
ever, is to expose danger and record the means of advancing health. The day
for poisoning innocent children through greed or ignorance ought to end. To
our knowledge, Castoria is a remedy which produces composure and health, by . /
regulating the system—not by stupefying it—and our readers are entitled to
the information.—Rail's Journal of Health,
Letters from Prominent Physicians
addressed to Chas. H. Fletcher.
Dr. B. Halstead ScoK, of Chicago, Ills., says: "ITiave prescribed your
Castoria often for infants during my practice, and find It very satisfactory.'*
Dr. William Belmont, of Cleveland, Ohio, says: "Your Castoriafitanda
first in its class. In my thirty years of practice X can say I never have
found anything that so filled the place."
Dr. J. H. Taft, of Brooklyn, N. Y., says: "I have used your Castoria and
found It an excellent remedy in my household and private practice for
many years. The formula Is excellent."
Dr. R. J. Hamlen, of Detroit, Mich., eays: "I prescribe your Castoria
extensively, as I have never found anything to equal It for children's
troubles. I am aware that there are imitations in the field, but I alwayi
see that my patients get Fletcher's."
Dr. Wa J McCrann, of Omaha, Neb., says: "As the father of thirteen
children I certainly know something about your great medicine, and aside
from my own family experience I have in my years of practice found Cas-
toria a popular and efficient remedy in almost every home."
Dr. J. R. Clausen, of Philadelphia, Pa., says: "The name that your Cas-
toria has made for itself in the tens of thousands of homes blessed by the
presence of children, scarcely needs to be supplemented by the endorse-
ment of the medical profession, but I, for one, most heartily endorse it and
believe it an excellent remedy."
Dr. R. M. Ward, of Kansas City, Mo., says: "Physicians generally do not
prescribe proprietary preparations, but in the case of Castoria my experi-
ence, like that of many other physicians, has taught me to make an ex-
ception. I prescribe your Castoria in my practice because I have found it
to be a thoroughly reliable remedy for children's complaints. Any physi-
cian who has raised a family, as I have, will join me in heartiest recom-
mendation of Castoria."

Washington, June 3.—Despite a dem-
onstration by Cuban rebels at El Co-
bre, near Santiago, the gunboat Pa-
ducah was held at Daiquiri, where con-
ditions are disturbed, according to ad-
vices received by the state department
tonight. The Paducah was ordered
held in readiness to proceed to Santi-
ago, but advices tonight said the Cu-
man cavalry had put down the rebels
at El Cobre, and that the gunboat
woud not leave Daiquiri at present.

Just inside and below the knee. I
neglected it for a day or two.' then it
began to hurt me pretty badly. I put

but when I had used it a week, It hurt
so badly that I changed to oint-

i/o badly that I couldn't use It any
more, and that was the fourth week
after I was hurt.
"Then I begun to use Cutlcura Oint-

"Cuticura Soap Is the best soap I
ever saw. I have used all kinds of
soap for washing my face, and always
it would leave my face smarting. I
had to keep a lotion to stop the smart,
no matter how expensive a soap I
used. I find at last in Cuticura Soap
a soap that will clean my face and
leave no smarting, and I do not have
to use any lotion or anything else to
ease It. I believe Cuticura Soap is the
best soap made." (Signed) Mrs. M.
