And then the Hin. ktey kiddle got a

There wa'n't a single feller that could go
and rescue him!
"Choc." up and shucked his trouaera and

Wster in ti e Suburbs.
Not far from thi River Tiber In a
suburb of Rome—o be precise, the
Rial to des Retired Farmeria—a dust-
covered traveler from Kalamazoo,
Mich., drank greedily at the town
pump'
Again and again he filled the rude
gourd-shell and diained it to the last
globular prism!
"Dost like the water?" queried Adol-
phus Buttinski of 7-11 Rip Van Win-
kle boulevard, standing hard by.
"Ah, indeed! Have one?" respond-
ed the man from the town where the
celery grows.
"For«S0 long years 1 have par-
taken of this liquid fount in the pub-
lic arenio." began Mr. Buttinski, lav-
ing his lips lovingly in the cooling
water of the gourd and drinking
deep! Fed by the pure rains of
heaven, its nectar passeth the sweet-
ness of wine! Invigorating cup, I
drink to thee once more as I have
again and again for 80 long—"
"Git out o' there, ol* whiskers!
Outen the wayW bawled the plebeian
foreman of a repair gang. "We's
come to' fix a wheeze In thla here
town pump!"
And they fell to work madly, not
being members of a labor union!
"Ah. ha! What's this?" suddenly
cried a burly Roman appearing above
the well brim and gingerly holding a
deceased and decrepit cat by the tall!
"Have a drink, fellers!"
" 'Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him
well!''1' gasped the man from Mich-
igan vigorously poking his finger
down his throat to superinduce
nausea!
"Hey, you resident of the Rialto
dea Uoldbrlckibus!" he shouted, "it'a
been ralnin' cats and dogs in Rome
again!"
But Adolphus Buttinski was out be-
hind the toga shop of Kotneo de Oon-!
talcs, tickling his palate with a whlap '
of chippy-grass In a mad endeavor to
cause the upheaval of an acquired
liquidation of 40 years'
"Rome! Rome! How many crimes
ape committed In thy name!"—and
this Is one cf the worst of them!
John's Arithmetic.
Teacher—"Now, Johnnie, the farm-
er's wife has four eggs left after send-
ing her husband to market, and her
three salwart sons are clamoring for
breakfast. If she divides them equal-
ly whst will she have left?"
Johnnie—"Nuthln'!"
Teacher—"Nothing? Why, John,
how stupid you are!"
Johnnie—"She has four eggs aad
three boys*"
T.—"Yes."
J.—"Ain't none of 'em bad?"
T.—"Na not one!"
J.—"She won't have nuthln' loft,
'ceptln' the shells! Who ever heard
of three boys leavln' anything left
of four scrambled eggs!"
Stub Ends.
Death always seems to be lying In
wait for the man who Is Just getting
ready to rest and enjoy life.
The trouble with a married man la
that he doesn't get a new suit often
enough to feel real comfortable in
one.
The proof of a wife's cooking some-
times is the undertaker s bill.
Many a man la in Jail because he
was found out.
The average man gives better ad-
vice than he takes.
The difference between what some
men infer they make and what they
really make, woald keep a large fam-
ily in luxury.
What we need in this country la a
batch of married folks who will act
toward each other as they did before
marriage.
